Negative Consequences of Sterotyping

If someone was to describe a person as tall and athletic, you could assume that person to be either male or female. If added to that description was that they liked to dance and wore tight clothing, one might lean more to the thought of the person being a female. If still nothing was said about their gender, but it was also stated that the person was wearing a tight pair of shorts and a hot pink crop top shirt that exposed their stomach, almost everyone would assume a female was being described. However, if you were to drive down Archer, or 13th street in Gainesville Florida at the right time you would possibly have to do a double take at the person performing on the side of the road. All of the descriptions listed above are describing a male, who stands on the corner of one of these roads dancing and flashing peace signs as cars drive by. As he dances there are many different reactions, from people honking, to flipping him the bird, to others yelling shouts of disgust and curse words. The most common comment he receives is being called gay. This man’s sexual preference is unknown to the world, yet because of the way he dresses and his actions he is stereotyped as being a homosexual, despite the fact that if you were to talk to him, you would quickly find out that is not the case.

Before going any further we must understand what a stereotype is. When researching there are many definitions that address this but the most complete I found is from a website that not only helps people find a therapist but also advocates fair treatment and understanding from therapists. ...he connotation of the stereotyping from negative to a more positive outlook. Stereotyping can have many side effects that can lead to self-fulfillment of the stereotype, discrimination, self-stereotyping, as well as more severe problems such as depression, and lowered self-worth. Like the man who dances on corners in his free spirited ways, we should all be a little more open to not just look at a person and judge them but to take the time to get to know them before placing them in a neat category. It may be more work to change the way you learned to view people but it could drastically change the way another person views themselves and in return the way they may view you. You may not be able to change the world, but you can change your attitude about the world, and open up more opportunities for yourself by not jumping to conclusions about people you don’t know.
