Mathilde Loisel, the main character in the short story “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, is what you would call a dynamic character. Within the story she begins to transition from who she was at the beginning to who she will be at the end. Her change is not by choice, nor did she ever expect it to happen. It hits her like a baseball to the head that you did not see coming. Though it happens quickly, it does not happen all at once. Through the story she reaches very high points and very low points in her life. In the beginning, Mathilde is materialistic. She believes she was born for riches and made for beautiful jewels. All of the important people would be there and he thought she would love the idea of going out. She was not happy or pleased at all. She became angry and asked him what she would wear since she did not have any gowns or jewels for such a party. He seen the hurt in her eyes and asked how much a nice dress would cost and offered her the money. She took it willingly and went out to buy her dress. There was still one problem, she did not have the beautiful jewels she wished to wear with it. Her husband had an idea, he believed she should visit her wealthy friend and ask to borrow a necklace. So she did. She went straight to Madame Forestier and without question she allowed her to choose and borrow the necklace she wished. Mathilde found the most gorgeous diamond necklace she had ever seen. That was the one, the one she had been searching for. She drank and danced the night away with the other women, just like she had always dreamed of. She was exactly who she wanted to be in that very moment. She was briefly living the life she had always dreamed of. Mathilde was a completely different person at this party. She was happy, vibrant, and full of life. Sadly, the night came to an end. As she and her husband left the party they could not find a cab and began to walk. Not long after they came upon an old carriage which brought them to their doorstep. Inside, as she was staring in the mirror before getting undressed she realized the necklace was missing, it was no longer around her neck! She was no longer the happy and vibrant woman she was just a few moments ago. She let out a cry and her husband asked what was wrong. "I . . . I . . . I 've no longer got Madame Forestier 's necklace. . . ." (Maupassant). Scared and in a panic, he went out to look for it, it was nowhere to be found. They tried the police station and put advertisements in the newspaper offering a reward but to no avail. They decided it was best to lie to Madam Forestier and tell her the clasp had broken and it was being mended. All the while, they planned to replace the diamonds. To afford such a magnificent piece of jewelry they had to borrow the money. Taking a thousand here and a thousand there from many men and entering agreements to pay it
