The question of nature vs. nurture, or biology (hereditary) vs. the environment is a relevant question in the study of development. Some believe on the development is mostly caused by biology and has little to do with the environment, while others believe the opposite (Arnett 52). Regardless, most scholars believe that both contribute at least a little bit to development (Arnett 52). When he reached 19 months, Todd received a developmental report saying if he was delayed or advanced in any developmental areas.

Piaget’s sensorimotor stage describes how the infant develops in terms of the sensory system, and is divided into six subcategories: simple reflexes, primary circular reactions, secondary circular reactions, coordination of secondary circular reactions, tertiary circular reactions and mental combinations (Arnett 154-155). Piaget’s stages are discontinuous, meaning they happen separately from each other. However, there is a different, continuous way of looking at development: information processing. Information processing looks at the steady, gradual changes that occur overtime and the thinking capacities (thinking, processing, and memory) that are always there (Arnett157-158). Cognitively, Dominic is not interested in little art projects and becomes frustrated when he works with blocks and shapes. The professional text that someone in my field would use is the ASQ-3. The ASQ-3 Ages & Stages Questionnaires is designed to screen children’s developmental performance that must be completed by the parents. It is a series of 21 questions with questions ranging in the areas from communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social skills specifically for 36 month to 38 month old toddlers. For the communication section, an example of a question asks is “When you ask your child to point to her ears, feet, hair, eyes, and nose, does she correctly point to at least seven body parts?”. In the gross motor section, a question ask “Does your child jump with both feet leaving the floor at the same time?”. A fine motor question that was asked was, “When drawing, does your child hold a pencil between her thumb and fingers like an adult does?”. The child that I tested will be referred to as K.L. I tested her on April 14th 2016. K.L. is 2 years old, with her exact age being 2 years 9 months and 14 days. I called and asked her mother if she would mind dropping K.L. off with me for a few hours so I could perform the test, and then pick her back up after the test was complete. This test more accurate when the caregiver is not present. K.L. has a step sister and a baby brother on the way. She has always been in the daycare setting, because her grandmother is a provider. At sixteen, she has entered the adolescence stage and entered puberty. She demonstrated normal physical movement and had no signs of any disability that pertained her from adequate physical activity. Both her gross and motor skills were visible in the observation. Her cognitive development is visible, when she is able to think and make fast decisions to problems as they arise. Her cognitive development has reached a point where she no longer views problems in a concrete way but rather think abstractly about them in solutions. The ability to solve problems the last minute and look for solutions make her cognitive development ready for early adulthood. While she was not given a grade right away for her presentation, it was clear in the observation that her overall school performance is at or above normal level. It is inferred though this observation that the child has good communication skills which is something most peers her age can be lacking
An assessment that I always use is Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). Each child receives this assessment. Working in the W. Children’s Learning and Development Center for the past thirteen years allowed me to use them numerous times and have a complete understanding of each child’s developmental based on the information provided when the assessment is resumed. Starting working there with the three years old for two years, I remember vaguely when we applied the Ages & Stages to them. I am not aware of the questions being asked for that age group anymore. Working for the infants and toddlers for eleven years now, allow me to be knowledgeable about where is supposed to be. I usually use the questionnaire when they are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14
The cognitive aspect utilizes Piaget’s theory of development. Piaget’s theory includes four stages: The Sensorimotor Stage, The Preoperational Stage, The Concrete Operational Stage, and The Formal Operational Stage (Siegler et al.,135). I believe that a child’s growth is developmental, and each child needs a secure caring and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and developed emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. I believe nature and nurture are the two aspects that influence in child development. Nature and nurture are different in several ways, but they both play an important role in child development. I believe that the environment that a person grows up in has the most influence on child development because children reflect what they are taught and what they learn from the people around them.

Over the course of this “interview” came a new found understanding for the cognitive development of a child, and their reasoning which came as a great surprise. Answers that were presented, and rationales for why things were as they were sincerely amazed me. Mental capabilities mature with age, and I now understand how brilliant Piaget was for classifying such behaviors.

He was an inspiration to many who came after and took up his ideas. Piaget's ideas have generated a huge amount of research which has increased our understanding of cognitive development.” (McLeod 2009). Piaget purposed that we move through stages of cognitive development. He noticed that children showed different characteristics throughout their childhood development. The four stages of development are The Sensorimotor stage, The Preoperational Stage, The Concrete operational stage and The Formal operational stage.
This only happens when children are able to allow their existing schemas to handle new information through the first process, assimilation. The last of Piaget’s theory is the stages of development. We will look at the first two stages, which are the sensorimotor and preoperational stages. During the stage of sensorimotor, which happens during the first two years from birth, they will undergo a key feature of knowing and having object permanence that also means that if a particular object was hidden or covered by a cloth, he or she will be able to actively search for it. The preoperational stage takes place from two years of age until they are seven years old.
As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually. In this paper I will review some of the main topics that I found to be interesting but also resourceful for my future aspiration not only as a family life educator but also a mother one day.
