The Nature-Nurture Issue and Psychological Perspectives Nature vs. Nurture In the book “Psychology of Everyday Life” we are told the definition of nature/nurture issue. It is the age old controversy over the relative influence of genes and experience in the development of psychological traits and behaviors arising from the interaction of nature and nurture (Myers 7). It is a debate on whether behavior is genetic or learned. I believe behavior can be learned more so than being genetic. If you are raised in a bad environment it can have so many negative effects. Such as depression, malnutrition, and hygiene. If you’re observing someone every day I feel that it definitely become a learned behavior for the child. We can ask the question; does genes or environment play a bigger part in someone’s behavior? I honestly think genes and environments always combine to produce certain behaviors. Psychoanalysis was focused on understanding the unconscious motivations that drive behavior while behaviorism studied the conditioning processes that produce behavior. Humanist thinkers felt that both psychoanalysis and behaviorism were too pessimistic, either focusing on the most tragic of emotions or failing to take into account the role of personal choice. Humanism also suggests that people possess personal agency and that they are motivated to use this free will to pursue things that will help them achieve their full potential as human beings.
