Who is most affected by Diabetes?
For Diabetes, most the new cases come from ethnic groups other Non-Hispanic whites. The ethnic groups in the U.S. that is most affected by Diabetes are American Indians and Native Alaskans. These ethnic groups makes up 16.1% of all the cases of diabetes. Asian Americans are much more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes than other ethnic groups despite having a lower body mass index (BMI) number.
Risk Factors of Diabetes?
The large influx of new cases of Diabetes can be drawn from the fact that there is an increasingly number of people that are either overweight or obese. Over the past three decades in the U.S. there has been an expansion of people that either overweight or obese. Since Diabetes is a metabolic disease most people that are overweight or obese are more prevalent. The reason behind this trend is that as the human body develops more fat, especially belly fat, the cells in the body begin to develop a resistance to insulin thus mostly causing Type 2 Diabetes (CDC, 2013).

The U.S. is a developed country, thus individuals have more disposable income that they can spend on groceries. However, since the federal law in 1996 that gave way to high fructose corn syrup and genetically modified (GMO) food, there has been a rise in obesity and Diabetes.
In Europe, although they are a developed country, the food in the grocery stores are usually more because of the strict laws that put on food. Most of the food that the U.K. population eats are from organically feed livestock with Non-GMO feed. Given that the food that the U.K. population is healthier, the rate of obesity and Diabetes is moderately lower than the U.S (NON-GMO project, 2013).
