Living in a democratic society, all the individuals have natural rights and responsibilities. Natural rights are the fundamental human rights that every individual have at birth and no government can deny it. The natural rights that human being should have are right of freedom, equality, and change. Since the society gives us these natural rights, we have the responsibility to follow it.
The first natural right that individuals should have is freedom. All the people that live in a society should have freedom, the ability to do what they want to do. However, as Locke also says in the Second Treatise of Government, “But though this be a state of liberty, yet it is not a state of licence” (Locke148), that this liberty does not equal to the permission
First of all, the Affordable Care Act benefits everybody in the society; it protects people’s lives when they are in risk. Second, the society provides people health care; it is understandable that we have to pay back with new taxes and we have to follow the law because we benefit from it. According to “Crito”, Socrates says that “and after you were born and nurtured and educated, could you, in the first place, deny that you are our offspring and servant?” (Plato 135). Society gives people everything and people should pay back to them if the society requires us to do so. Furthermore, Thoreau says that “I have never declined paying the highway tax, because I am as desirous of being a good neighbor as I am of being a subject, and as for supporting schools, I am doing my part to educate my fellow-countrymen now” (Thoreau 189). For Thoreau, as long as he gets benefit from it and it also benefits other people, then he will pay the taxes. Therefore, in this case, the Affordable Care Act provides everybody health care including himself. If he is still alive, he would definitely agree with it. Similarly, King says, “Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds” (King 138). King believes no one should consider as an outsider. All the laws that set up by the government should benefit everybody in the society.
