The historical context of the documents complicate the narrative of the United States' "colonial beginnings" because it shows that the original treatment of the Native Americans shaped the United States' beginning, much more than what most are lead to believe. This is shown through the timing of certain events, the issues that caused the events, and the people who helped make many of the events happen or end. The timing of the events, shown through the documents helps uncover some of the where and whys about why the treatment of the Native Americans shaped America’s beginnings. The main timing and reason was colonization. As the European settlers began to colonize the Americas, they saw that they could use the Natives and treat them however they wanted because it was free or low-costly labor. The ill treatment of these people caused many to rebel and revolt against the colonists, or in many circumstances, it caused the Native populations to decline dramatically in numbers. This decimation of the Native American populations left small amounts of people to care for the land, shaping the United States’ environment for future generations. This is part of the reason why many Natives felt resentment to the colonists both in the present time and the future. The order that many of the events happened also affected the issues that first caused the colonization of the Americas. America was originally colonized because European countries were looking for an easier way to the Indies. This brings forth the thought that colonization made life easier for the Europeans. It brought luxuries and items that were needed to countries that requested them and it encouraged more trade throughout the countries. In An Account, Much Abbreviated, of The Destruction of The Indies, the author is giving an introduction on Bartolome De Las Casas who was a Christian missionary at the time of the Spaniards discovering the New World. He had a rather self-taught oriented theology, philosophy and law. He went to Hispaniola ten years after its discovery in 1502 ; in Santo Domingo he was ordained priest in 1512 and a year later he went as a chaplain in the expedition that conquered Cuba . After going to Hispaniola years after Columbus settled there, he did not support what the Spaniards did to the indigenous people. All through the article, Axtell summarizes the life of the Native Americans after Columbus acquainted America to the world. Axtell launches his essay by pointing out how Christopher Columbus’s image changed in the eyes of the public over the past century. In 1892, Columbus’s work and admirations overshadowed the tears and sorrows of the Native Americans. In 1542, most based on his effort, Spain has passed the New Law, which prohibit slaving Indians (Foner, p. 7). In 1552, he published the book A Short Account of the Destruction of The Indies.

In conclusion, the Aborigines and Native Americans were treated on an unequal basis by the Europeans. They were stripped of their land and rights and were treated poorly. This has given them typical thoughts about their history that allow them to connect within their groups/tribes. This conjointly shows the inhumanity of individuals, particularly the European settlers. They are therefore believe they have the rights to take another man’s property/and or land and kick them out so they can gain what the other person has. It makes one trust the final lack of kindness, generosity, and human sympathy within the world.

One night, Geraldine’s rapist is released, Joe’s father demonstrates the convoluted mess that is Indian law. Beginning his speech, Joe’s father mentions how Johnson v McIntosh (1823) is the most pivotal and detrimental case to American Indians. He states that the case stripped Indians of all of their land, allowed the Federal Government to practice manifest destiny, granted the government absolute title to the land, and only gave Indians right of occupancy, which could be easily retracted (Erdrich, The Round House, 229). Joe’s father continued to list court cases that were oppressing Indians, until he reached Oliphant v Suquamish, a court case that stated Indians do not have the right to try and punish non-Indians on their land (Erdrich, The Round House, 229). These court cases, and a plethora more, harshly depict the federal government’s views on Indians. Time after time the federal and local governments ruled Indians as inferior and took their rights away from them.
