With the Olympics less than 13 days away many athletes are making their way to Rio de Janeiro. But many athletes are waiting until open ceremonies are closer because they don’t want to be in Rio longer than they have to. Many athletes are waiting because they are afraid they will get the Zika virus. Some athletes are so scared of the Zika virus, they withdrew from the games. Making the total count of athletes the lowest since the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin.
According to the Ministerity of Health, “the Zika virus is a mild cebrile viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes” (“Zika Virus”). These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters. They can also bite at night. The WHO (World Health Organization) “estimates 3 million to 4 million people across the Americas will be infected with the virus in the next year” ("Zika Virus and Potential Complications.”). "As long as the mosquito keeps reproducing, each and every one of us is losing the battle against the mosquito," Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said recently. "We have to mobilize so we do not lose this battle" (LaMotte, "Zika Virus: 5 Things You Need to Know.”).
Many people mainly women are fearful of Zika because Zika is linked to microcephaly. According to WebMD, “Microcephaly stunts a baby’s growth, causing devastating, sometimes fatal damage, and it can result in miscarriage and stillbirth” ("Zika Virus Symptoms, Countries, Risk, and Prevention."). Microcephaly can occur because a baby’s brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size. According to the CDC,” babies with microcephaly can have a range of other problems, depending on how severe their microcephaly is. Some of others problems include...

...ing bugs. “Bed nets form a protective barrier around people sleeping under them. However, bed nets treated with an insecticide are much more protective than untreated nets. The insecticides that are used for treating bed nets kill mosquitoes, as well as other insects. The insecticides also repel mosquitoes, reducing the number that enter the house and attempt to feed on people inside” ("Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets.").
As for the athletes in Rio. If you follow these steps and minimize your time outside especially in the day time. You will decrease your odds of getting the Zika virus. And it could save your life.
In conclusion, the Zika virus is very dangerous, even though we do not know much about. And currently there is no cure for Zika. Zika is very dangerous for women and her unborn child. Zika is getting more dangerous and is not going anywhere any time soon.
In the article “When Mosquitoes Were Killers in America” by Lauren Tarshis, She makes the statement “Yet mosquitoes are far more than a nuisance.” What she means is that mosquitoes aren't a little bug that just sucks a little blood and can be annoying, but instead it uses all that and more. Mosquitoes have killed millions upon millions of people by spreading disease like malaria. An example of how she supports this claim is in the article, she says “ In this way, bite by itchy bite, 212 million people are infected with malaria every year” (Tarshis 13). And that is only a year with bug spray, shots, and all the other things that help stop mosquitoes. So when the U.S. government tried to save people from these murders little insects. So they
Now that it has been fourteen years since the virus was identified in New York, according to the CDC’s report “West Nile Virus Disease And Other Arboviral Diseases-United States, 2011,” WNV has become the leading cause of domestically acquired arboviral diseases in the United States, an arboviral disease, which can also be called an arthropodborne disease, is a disease that is transmitted by an arthropod vector. The main vector of West Nile virus is the mosquito, other arthropods such as the tick and fleas may also carry the disease but this is less likely. There is not one specific species of mosquitoes that is capable of being the host of the disease, almost all species of mosquitoes can be the host of the disease. Since mosquito populations are more prevalent in hot and moist climates, it is then safe to assume the both temperature and rainfall an effec...
You wouldn’t think the carrier of this disease would come from a little mosquito bite but it does.
Mosquitoes, fever and even death may be some of the things that come to mind when we're asked to think about West Nile Virus. Many of us would consider mosquitoes a small trade-off for what the summertime provides, but what if there were more at risk than a bump above your skin and an itch? In a not so distant past West Nile Virus ascended into news broadcasts all throughout the country and alarming it's residents. Today however, that all seems to be an afterthought. The intentions today are to cover the first found cases of West Nile Virus, the symptoms of West Nile Virus, and finally West Nile Virus' impact on the United States. Through the research here, the hope is that we can all have a better understanding of how West Nile Virus works.
...e a much better chance of even avoiding the itch of a mosquito bite. Make sure that you drain standing water around your yard and repair the screens on your windows and doors to keep the bugs from coming in.
The article is about how the Zika virus has reached Ontario from the first time. A Canadian citizen travelling back from Columbia brought it over and has now been in contact with their health care providers. This is not the first time the virus has come into Canada there has been a few cases in Alberta, B.C. and Quebec. It is unlikely that many Canadians will be infected with the virus, but knowing that this dangerous virus has crossed our border has many worried.
The Ebola Virus is an extremely deadly virus found in Africa. There have been multiple outbreaks across Africa and one in the United States. The Ebola virus basically causes uncontrollable bleeding externally and internally. Then your organs become liquefied. This usually results in death(www.encyclopedia.com). The following report contains info on the characteristics and history of the Ebola Virus.
The Ebola virus was discovered in 1976. It has four strains, each from a different geographic area, but all give their victims the same painful, often lethal symptoms.
The Ebola Haemorrahagic Fever, or Ebola for short, was first recognized as a virus in 1967. The first breakout that caused the Ebola virus to be recognized was in Zaire with 318 people infected and 280 killed. There are five subtypes of the Ebola virus, but only four of them affect humans. There are the Ebola-Zaire, Ebola-Sudan, Ebola-Ivory Coast and the Ebola-Bundibugyo. The fifth one, the Ebola-Reston, only affects nonhuman primates. The Ebola-Zaire was recognized on August 26, 1976 with a 44 year old schoolteacher as the first reported case. The Ebola-Sudan virus was also recognized in 1976 and was thought to be that same as Ebola-Zaire and it is thought to have broken out in a cotton factory in the Sudan. The Ebola-Ivory Coast was first discovered in 1994 in chimpanzees in the Tia Forest in Africa. On November 24, 2007, the Ebola-Bundibugyo branch was discovered with an approximate total of 116 people infected in the first outbreak and 39 deaths. The Ebola-Reston is the only one of the five subtypes to not affect humans, only nonhuman primates. It first broke out in Reston, Virginia in 1989 among crab eating macaques.
Thesis Statement: The deadly virus Ebola is killing thousands of innocent people world wide, but there are some simple steps that are being taken to prevent this coming tide of death.
With over two hundred countries participating, the Olympic Games is easily considered as one of the largest multisport event known to history. The Olympics are held at a different country, and even more rarely at the same city. For a country to be chosen to host the Olympics, the country’s National Olympic Committee (the country’s representatives for the Olympics) nominates a city (from the country they represent) that they think has potential in hosting the Olympics nine years prior to when they wish to host the Olympics. It is a two year process that consists of: Application Phase, Candidate Phase and the Election of the Host City. The country that wins the election is given seven years to prepare for the Olympics. (International Olympic Committee, n.d., p. xx-xx) The hosting country expends billions of dollars, usually money they don’t have, preparing for the Olympics. Then the question is raised 'why would a country go through so much trouble and spend an outrageous amount of money to host this event?' Throughout this discussion paper it will address all the pros and cons for a country to host the Olympics. It will also see if a smaller sports event can produce the same benefits the Olympic offers with less cost and risk.
The organizer have been missing a great opportunity to celebrate their games and enjoy the festivities because masses of cheering fans and Olympics revelers would help present their country in the possible light, as the games are being televised to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 4 billion.
Brazil is unarguably, to an extent, an extremely fast-growing economy. The country has overcome boom after bust in the economy and has now made it into the vision of other first world countries as a nation that is no longer “developing.” Though Brazil has overcome hyperinflation, military leaders, slavery, and many more issues in the past few centuries, the country is becoming more and more known for its economy and that the country is no longer exclusively just agricultural. This economy has given the world, and the International Olympic Committee, hope in the future of the country, and has allowed the IOC to award the 2016 Olympics to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Though the economy may prosper after the Olympics, the Brazilian government has other issues at hand to deal with that should have been prioritized before wanting to host the Olympics. Although there are many cases for the country to grow economically from hosting the Olympics, the government of Brazil should have taken care of many issues, such as the poor distribution of wealth, education systems, and other areas of infrastructure, before looking to host the Olympics, and these issues will hurt the country long after the Games are over.
The Olympics is a mega sport event which is presented once every four years and it has become a golden opportunity for hosts to emerge as a strong country. Hosting the Olympics is a big thing for every country and they receive worldwide attention from the preparation period until the actual event. However, hosting the Olympics comes with heavy stakes and experts tend to argue about the appropriateness for the countries to host it. There may be people who oppose with hosting the Olympics, however, the country rebranding, the economy hike and also the pride and patriotism of citizens just demonstrate the need of hosting the Olympics for the development of the country.
