The National Academy of Science (NAS) is a prestigious non-profit organisation that prides itself on excellency in the fields of science, engineering and medicine and is comprised of many distinguished and well-renowned scientists.1The organisation is responsible for providing objective information of a high quality in these fields, and so, is a prestigious organisation where only the most outstanding academics are elected based on their contributions to expanding scientific research.2 The NAS is in charge of providing independent and objective advice to the nation on related matters.2 Based on this model, A South African organisation would like to be formed. I would like to elect Dr. David Nalin as an extraordinary medical doctor and physiologist.
Dr. David Robert Nalin is an American Physiologist who has had well over 120 journals published in various journals, with majority of his research being published in well renown journals such as The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Nalin’s research first began at the early age of 26, while he was doing his medical residency in Bangladesh at the Pakistan Sato Research Lab during the time of a cholera epidemic in the region.3 He had noticed that many cholera patients were dying, due to an insufficiency of staff and at the time, the only treatment for cholera was fluid replacement therapy via intravenous therapy.3
However due to the shortage of doctors, it had become increasingly difficult to manage such a large amount of patients. This resulted in Dr. Nalin and his colleagues seeking alternative possible treatment mechanisms in order to ensure that all the cholera patients could be effectively rehydrated. He also aimed to find a suitable treatment which would decrease...

...al college, Albany Medical College, where he had studied for his MD degree closing their international research programme.31 The endowment income created from his fund is used annually to support international research for medical students.31 Nalin’s has had a long research career, with well over 40 years work experience in medical research. His research has been conducted in a wide array of fields: vaccinology, malaria, infectious and waterborne diseases and he has had well as over 120 journal articles published in journals which are seen by many in the scientific community as prestigious. This, together with his many public health endeavours and humanitarian achievements as well as his legacy to ensure other students are allowed the opportunity to conduct research abroad makes Dr. Nalin a truly remarkable physiologist and an excellent candidate for the Academy.

The book, The Ghost Map, tells the story of the cholera outbreak that took place in England during the medieval era. During this time, London became popular, causing it to become one of the most populous urban cities in England. However, it suffered from overcrowding, a large lower class, and little health regulations. As a result, living conditions and water supply were not the cleanest, and many died from the disease cholera. Though this epidemic led to many deaths/illnesses during it’s time, it has proven to be helpful and important to public health today. Some public health advancements that have occurred as a result include healthier, cleaner, and longer lives lived.
Paul Farmer was born in Massachusetts in 1959, went to Harvard Medical School, became a doctor, and ended up living and working in Haiti. He co-founded an organization in 1987 called Partners in Health (PIH). The philosophy behind the organization is that everyone, no matter who or where has a right to health care. Paul Farmer and PIH have already made amazing progress in Haiti, Peru, and several other countries, helping people get the care they need. PIH’s website lists a detailed history of they and Farmer’s work in Haiti. When Paul Farmer first came to Cange, Haiti as a medical student in 1983, the place was in shambles. In 1956, a dam was built on the Artibonite River, flooding the village and forcing the residents to move up into the hills. Many of these displaced villagers were still essentially homeless after nearly thirty years, and had little access to quality health care. With the founding of the Zanmi Lasante clinic later in 1983, Farmer and his friend Ophelia Dahl set the people of Cange on the road to recovery by providing access to doctors, medicine, and emergency care, all completely free. (“Partners”) One of Farmer’s focuses was on tuberculosis (TB) and has had much success on this front. Through new studies and methods such as active case finding and community health workers, as well as his work with multidrug-resistant TB, Paul Farmer has revolutionized treatment of tuberculosis in Haiti and around the world.
Galenic practices that originated in the second century were still the predominant medical concepts almost fourteen hundred years later, and with little advancement beyond the humoral theory that promoted exsanguinations as cure, they further weakening those afflicted with fever and assured they did not survive. The chapter entitled Deadly Fevers, Deadly Doctors is, by McNeill’s own admission, rife with modern criticism and judgment that, “are not up to the standards of the historical profession” (63). That being said, the humor he injects in this chapter keeps the reader from setting aside what could easily devolve into a depressing clinical narrative of the brutish death that accompanied yellow fever. The tone may not be up to academic standards, but the research is, at least for the European contribution. Whether one agrees with his arguments or not, McNeil has proven the relevance of disease study in attempts to reconstruct historical contexts. The main take away from this chapter is that the confusion surrounding the transmission of diseases is part of the reason armies were sent over and over again in spite of the infectious disaster that repeatedly cut through the ranks, at great expense both in men and in

“The Nephrology Nursing Journal” was initially published in 1974, and is a refereed clinical and scientific resource that provides current information on a wide variety of subjects to facilitate the practice of professional nephrology nursing (ANNA, 2015). Its purpose is to disseminate information on the latest advances in research, practice, and education to nephrology nurses to positively influence the quality of care they provide (ANNA, 2015). It is designed to meet the educational and information needs of nephrology nurses in a variety of roles at all levels of practice, while also serving as a source of knowledge for non-nephrology nurses. (ANNA, 2015). Its content expands the knowledge base for nephrology nurses, stimulates professional growth, guides research-based practice, presents new technological developments, and provides a forum for review of critical issues promoting the advancement of nephrology nursing practice (ANNA, 2015).
Nomination to the Sanger Chapter of the National Honor Society is an absolute privilege. I strongly thank all those involved in the decision of the nominations. I firmly believe I have the character, service, and leadership that is desired in order to be accepted.
Victims ragged in agony, their muscles in continuous spasms. They could’ve died within hours. No one knew what was spreading the disease or how it could be stopped. After the outbreak ended, over 32 000 people had lost their lives. It was Britain’s first Cholera epidemic. The sewers were contaminating the water system and spreading the disease. At first they though it’s in the air but you could see how a cluster of people surrounding a water pump would have died quicker.

National Geographic Society The Problem Essay Position Statement The key managerial problem which John Fahey is facing is to decide as to whom the e-commerce head should report, in the current organizational structure of NGS, so that the new position gives him enough freedom to leverage the growth opportunities of the e-commerce platform efficiently. How much span of control for the new head is required to cope with declining print media sales and build the right balance between allocating investments and revenue allocations across different product units of the organisation? He should also have enough exposure to build strong customer relationships and brand loyalty by improving the membership program using e-commerce.

Cholera is still an extremely significant disease worldwide with over 5 million cases being reported per year (Ruiting & Reeves, 2002). Cholera is a diarrheal illness that progresses rapidly and is contracted by ingesting the bacterium Vibrio cholerae which causes an intestinal infection (CDC, 2013). In many cases the illness is mild with hardly any symptoms at all, but in some cases it can become severe. Approximately 5 percent of people who are infected exhibit severe symptoms such as extreme watery diarrhea, leg cramps, and vomiting (CDC, 2013). These symptoms usually occur at a rapid pace and unless treated can further lead to dehydration and shock which can ultimately cause death within hours. It is estimated that over 100,000 deaths occur each year around the world due to Cholera. (CDC, 2013)
