The world today is as interconnected and interdependent as never before mainly due to rapid globalization. The process of globalization has long began with human migration and trading of goods (Chanda). More recently, the world has experienced three rapid globalization periods. First, from the Industrial Revolution in Europe that opened up new resourceful lands in many other countries which encouraged the flow of people and foreign investments for productions (Salvatore and Dominick, page 2). The second phase of rapid increase in international trade happened during post WWII when heavy trade protections during the depression period were dismantled (Salvatore and Dominick, page 3). Present, globalization is at another peak development as telecommunication and transportation sped up “massive international capital flows resulting from elimination of most restrictions” across national borders (Salvatore and Dominick, page 4). Globalization represents the spread of culture, the movement of people, goods and services (YaleGlobal). Present day, the term, globalization is becoming a controversial term with many suggestive synonyms such as: Westernization or Americanization. Negative views blame globalization for sacrificing social and environmental well-being for corporate economic gains. On the other hand, supporters believe globalization leads to efficient use of resources and more product selections for end consumers. This paper will seek to explore the extension of western economic colonialism in modern globalization era. Specifically, the impacts of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Canada, United States and Mexico are compared and analyzed. This way, more equality and less “Americanization” will be reached via processes of globalization and greater mutual benefits will be achieved. On the other hand, others blame that globalization creates unequal distributions. For example, though incomes increased for nations, but they are not shared equally among citizens, creating more income disparities. The world economies are interconnected and interdependent than ever before. The international community should all collaborate and cooperate to manage globalization better so that it can be used to reduce exploitation and inequality it has created and to maximize the benefits of globalization for all economically, socially and environmentally.
