Overview of Myers-Briggs Personality Types
People with extraverted sensing feeling judging (ESFJ) personalities are known to be hard workers who value being in charge. One of the biggest strengths for ESFJs is the ability to recognize problems and delegate to resolve them. They are also known to play hard and find joy in entertaining others. Generally speaking ESFJs “wear their hearts on their sleeves” and therefore are easily wounded and have a difficult time controlling their emotions. While this trait is a weakness for many ESFJs it is also a strength as actors and actresses use this to express emotions through acting (Human Metrics Inc., 1998-2016).
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was designed to tell a person about the four mental functions and how they use them to perceive situations and in turn make decisions. Understanding your own Myers Briggs type indicator gives a person the advantage of knowing how to approach your career to be successful (The Myers & Briggs Foundation, 2016). When working with a group on a project, it is also important to understand each members Myers-Briggs personality type. Having this knowledge allows the group to utilize each person’s strengths for the best possible outcome.
After comparing the team’s MBTIs and seeing the variety of personality types it is clear each individual perceives things differently. Our group has the following 5 personality types INTJ, ESFP, ENTJ, ESFJ, and INFJ. Each bringing value to the project. For example, the INTJ values logic, systems and organization. Taking the Myers Briggs test educates a person on how they view situations and why they react the way they do. Many times it will point out personality traits you did not realize you had, giving you the opportunity to improve your weaknesses to become a better person. As a manager, the advantage of having your team take the test and knowing their results can help you understand how they perceive things and what causes them to act in certain ways (The Myers & Briggs Foundation, 2016). This can really help a manager understand an employee so they can work together to ensure they are the most productive. When your employees work to their fullest potential and are rewarded appropriately, you will have a fulfilled and loyal team.
