My Values and Morals Value to me is what a person thinks of as important and the worth they place on that importance. Value means in regards to society, as it is defined by Dictionary.com, (2016), “the ideals, customs, institutions, etc., of a society toward which the people of the group have an affective regard. These values may be positive, as cleanliness, freedom, or education, or negative, as cruelty, crime, or blasphemy”. They are important in health care as patients want to be treated with value, compassion and by an ethical standard of respect that they deserve, “wellness depends on fairness, and not just the interpersonal kind but also the distributive, procedural, cultural and organizational”, (Duff, Rubenstein, & Prilleltensky, 2016). If we as medical professionals cannot act with integrity, we cannot treat patients with dignity, and if we cannot display accountability for our actions, then mistakes are likely to be repeated but now with malice. Ethical behavior in health care is important as we need to treat all people with humility and respect, “so whatever you wish that other would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets”, (Matthew 7:12 ESV). Working in health care is an important job. People put their trust in us to do our very best to provide them with the absolute best care. Being entrusted with such responsibility requires nurses to conduct themselves both professionally and ethically. Nurses must adhere to the professional values of human dignity, integrity, autonomy, altruism, and social justice. It is these five values that guide us in our practice and as nurses we must promote and emulate these values. Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. Ethics is an important part of living in today’s society as it raises questions to our morality and how we react to certain situations. According to Bennett-Woods (2005), ethics is best defined as a “branch of philosophy that studies morality through the critical examination of right and wrong in human action”. Characters and behaviors start to form over time not just because of the morals we were brought up with but also through life experiences.
