The stress and strain of life's obstacles sometimes take us off course. Rivers have always seemed to play a major role in religion. The bible says Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist at the Jordan river, and as Jesus prayed, the Heavens opened. In the Hindu religion they believe in seven sacred rivers; the Hindus believe bathing in the Ganges river will cleanse them of their sins. I felt it was essential to illustrate a stable boat in my river of spirituality drawing. I believe our spiritual journey leads most of us on an array of river paths. Some rivers have clear skies with rocks along the way; other streams supply jagged lightning. My grandmother used to say to me, “Isaiah, your life is going to flash before your eyes.” I was close to my grandmother throughout my childhood. At the age of eight my teacher instructed me to write a story about my favorite person, I remember the project requirements like it was yesterday. I went to the stationery store with my grandmother and she purchased red construction paper. I had the entire weekend to create the story; it was a difficult decision for me to make, it was the first time I ever had to choose among my family members. I weighed the pros and cons of memories I had with all of my relatives and it narrowed down to my grandmother. I created a two column layout, I drew my grandmother and myself on the left side and I wrote the story on the right side. On Monday morning I woke up one hour earlier than I normally do. I was excited to present my story to my classmates. My teacher liked the story, although a few of my classmates did not understand why I did not choose my mother instead. I did not have an answer for them, I was too young to understand the type of relationship I h... ... middle of paper ... ...tice is to open our eyes and simply look around.” (Bender, 1997, p. 120) . I believe Sue Bender realized how simple it was to acknowledge the existence of God in the same way I did: by simply analyzing what we have and being grateful for it. At the age of seventeen I began to lead my life without regretting my past mistakes. I also began to appreciate all of the blessings that were given to me throughout my life. My new positive attitude allowed me to officially reach spiritual fulfillment. As the song goes by Jimmy Cliff, “ I can see clearly now the rain is gone.” My journey was clear to me, before I reached adulthood; I controlled the weather forecast of my life, I did not need a meteorologist. I understood I may always face rocks, eddies and waterfalls along the way but I have the ability to survive those events and continue to row toward sunny weather.
There is a woman, she will always in the softest place in your heart, you would like to spend all your life to love her; there is a love, it is Real and selfless and it will never stop, you do not need to return anything...... This man, called "mother ", this love, called" Motherhood "! “Mothers” by Anna Quindlen. I could not stop reading this essay again and again, because this essay tells exactly what I want to say when I am young. My parents leave me alone when I am 6 years old. They have to work outside of the country, during that time, transport and communication is not as convenient as now. So I can only see them once in three years. Growing up with “knowing that I have a mother and she is never around me whenever I need her”
The Souls of Black Folk are a collection of essays composed by W.E.B Du Bois’ highlighting the problems that the African-American race faced in American society. Du Bois describes the feeling of being “shut out from the[ir] world by a vast veil” (4). The veil is a metaphor that Du Bois presents representing a symbolic wall that separates the “whites” and “blacks”. To Du Bois, the veil emphasises the racial boundaries that the African-Americans faced, as well as their invisibility within society in U.S history. Throughout the text, Du Bois makes it evident that the most important issues are education, economic opportunities, as well as the emotional journey being shared. Du Bois states, “He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both
In the book, Parallel Journeys, Helen Waterford, one of the three authors, explains how she as well as millions of other Jews appreciated the smaller ‘gifts’ in life because they faced such a punishing lifestyle. After having to consume unsatisfactory food for many months, Helen talks about one extraordinary night. “‘There was one special night on Christmas. That was the first and only time we had meat for dinner. The meat was a freshly killed horse, and it tasted delicious to me. For this special occasion, each person's meal was put into a separate brown bowl. On other days, four of us had to share one bowl. Of course we had no knives or forks, no tables or chairs, but we did have meat”’ (145). Subsequent to Helen and Doris’s arrival in Chicago and reunion with Helen’s parents, the two arrived at their new house. “‘It was a single room, and I was
As a representation of life, it provides knowledge without words. The river’s many sounds suggest the noises of all living things, and the flow of the river, as well as the fact that its water perpetually returns, suggests the nature of time. “But of all the water's secrets, he saw today only a single one-one that struck his soul. He saw that this water flowed and flowed, it was constantly flowing, and yet it was always there; it was always eternally the same and yet new at every moment! Oh, to be able to grasp this, to understand this”(Hesse 84). The river is a main symbol from start to finish in Siddhartha and represents unity and the eternity of all things in the whole universe. "The new Siddhartha felt a deep love for this flowing water and decided that he would not leave it again so quickly" (Hesse 81). The river in Siddhartha prompts the comparison to the Holy Spirit in my opinion. The Holy Spirit is constantly guiding people who need its help. Just like in novel when Siddhartha was contemplating committing suicide, the river was there to help him. Jesus would refer to the Holy Spirit as a counselor that guides us through everyday life, and that’s just the reason why Siddhartha kept returning to the
Rivers represent eternity and the transitions of life. Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher, stated, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it 's not the same river and he 's not the same man”. In the concept of Buddhism, the river is a symbol of life cycles. One cannot leave
My life is continually unfolding into a more global understanding of faith, religion and culture where I once thought all was wrong and evil if not strictly Roman Catholic. One of the ways I cultivate my outlook is to analyze the different ways people honor the dead.
Good friends we have, Oh, good friends we have lost, Along the way. In this great future, you can't forget your past, so dry your tears I say…..No women No cry.” That’s a reggae song from the most well-known reggae singer, Bob Marley, mentioned in Alice Walker narrative essay called “Journey to Nine Miles”. Walker is an African-American writer who tells about her journey to the Jamaican gravesite of the reggae legend Bob Marley. Walker praised Marley of being true loving soul of Jamaica, for having political shrewdness, spiritual power and sexual wildness. The place is called Nine Miles because it was nine miles far from any village in the area. Nine Miles was the most tranquil and isolated place in the world according to Walker. Walker grasps why Marley wanted to be brought back to his home village he wanted to rest and also he was buried there for a good reason as it becomes a great tourist site which brought money to the village people. Walker journey was fulfilling although she saw that Jamaica is a poor country while much of the world thinks that it’s not that even in the poverty a person can see the beauty of the country and the love that surrounds her. Walker is successful at conveying her message about Jamaica and Bob Marley in her essay through the mood by the images and illustrations, through the technique of journey motif on how she describes her journey and herself as writer and through the tone she uses in her essay.
While Siddhartha believes that the river represents time, due to its never ending flow, I have learned that a river symbolizes more than just time, but also life itself. Even though the eternal cascade of water is
Destiny can be generally regarded as predestined. The experience of studying in America, attending Christian school, serving others as well as Christianity study was parts of God's plan, which I believe was what God meant for me.
Experiences from your life have the chance to either affect you seriously for life or affect you as long as they can apply to your life. In my life there has been about a handful of hardships, enough at least for my counselor as well as other acquaintances to be surprised I have made it this far without losing my mind. It all started when I was around seven, my dad lost his job in Seattle, Washington so we were forced to move to Inman, Kansas. We lived on and off with my grandparents for around six years. In this time I was multiply molested/ assaulted by my grandfather, my father’s step-father. My father had gone into a deep Depression as he wasn’t employed for a long time after we moved to Kansas. This lifted from time to time when he found different jobs, none of which lasted long.
Whenever I began expressing my thoughts or feelings my mother would interrupt me and change the topic. I had given up on resolving the long-standing issues that existed between us. On my sixteenth birthday my mother threw me a huge surprise party. I couldn 't remember the last time my mother had thrown a birthday party for me and felt touched. The evening resembled a scene from the childhood I was still missing. I enjoyed myself at the party and felt grateful to my mother. Finally, I was receiving the support and love I wanted from my mother. I was thrilled and full of hope for our future, but, my feelings of excitement did not last for
It seemed like a normal day when I entered Mrs. A’s AP Language and Composition class, but little did I know that she was going to assign a very important project that was going to take forever. I took my seat and wrote down what was on the board. Then I sat patiently and waited for Mrs. A to come explain what we were doing today. When the tardy bell rang, Mrs. A glided into the room and gave us all a stack of papers. She then proceeded to discuss our upcoming assignment, a memoir. As she explained the very important assignment, I wondered whom I would write about. No one really came to mind to write about and I thought for sure I would never be able to get this thing done on time. I finally decided that I would write in on my mother, Kari Jenson. I knew I would probably put the project off until the very end and do it the weekend before even though it would get on my mom’s nerves. Putting work off was just how I did everything, it worked for me. When I arrived home from school that day, I told mom about the project. I told her I would most likely write it about her and she was overjoyed.
In October of 2009, I had what some would call a spiritual transformation. For me, it was merely a switch in beliefs. Until that time I grew up never fearing the God, I always heard of and for several years prior to my switch I was staunchly an atheist in belief and practice. Though, I am not going to tell you exactly what occurred to make that switch but what I would like to tell you is my journey as a professed Christian, after my switch. My fight through religious error and the way out of it is a blessing I can only give credit to Gods Word for doing so. God’s Word is the only source of truth to be used in spite of the traditions of men, and it has led me to be saved in Christ. With that said I will proudly tell you the best gift I ever received and still do to this day is salvation; however, it had taken a thorough search in truth, a response of obedience, and God’s grace to receive it.
As a student in the Bible Teaching Principles class reflecting on what it means to be a Bible teacher, my focus since Saturday’s activity has changed. Coming into this class, my focus was definitely on the teaching aspect. However, while learning to become an effective teacher is certainly a valuable and worthwhile study, my focus since Saturday has shifted from the teaching aspect, to now the Word of God in my life as a teacher. Since Saturday’s activity, I have realized just how important my relationship with Christ is if I am to be an effective teacher. I can know and implement all the best teaching techniques, but if my personal walk with Christ is not where it needs to be, then my teaching will not be all that it can and should be. By doing various activities on
It was on a Friday morning at 4:30 A.M. that happiness and joy filled the hearts of both my parents. I was born on November 29, 1996 at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale Florida. My parents had five children, and among the five children that they had, I was the third (or middle) child from them. It started off as two boys, then I came along as the first girl, after it was another boy, then finally, another baby girl; so total was three boys and two girls. The way that my parents lived and treated each other was the same as if any other married couple that loved each other so much. They’ve gone through a lot to get to where they are now today, but they made it and along the way had us five children. They have been really strong with each other which made them only have the five of us and no other step children. My mom is a great cook and enjoy cooking for us; this is probably where my passion for culinary comes from. My dad is an amazing tailor, he is very good at making our clothes, and my passion for fashion probably came from him. My dad is also a teacher, one of the best math teacher I know, he is passionate about his job and his family is the center of his universe. I cannot finish this chapter without mentioning my grandmother, I was lucky enough to have ever met. I had spent part of my life time with her, like the rest of the family she is sweet, my grandmother Abelus,
