Service Learning For my service learning project I dedicated one hour to selling tickets for the benefited pulled pork dinner with our Cowley Activity Awareness Team (CAAT), and did the rest of my hours by serving at the lunch/dinner. The pulled pork dinner was hosted by ACES, another club at Cowley, and it all the money that was raised went towards a food packaging event in November. My duties in this were to fill up cups with water/tea, serve food, and send out prepared meals to cars. I chose to do this as my service learning project because I wanted to be face to face with the people that were helping us make a difference, and to gain experience with serving. There were many areas that I saw being used in this service learning event that we have been taught in psychology. We used classical conditioning which is the type of learning in which a response naturally elicited by one stimulus comes to be elicited by a different, formerly neutral, stimulus. Every time a person would walk into the room where we were serving food we would automatically start preparing our food and being ready to serve them when they got into line. We were being conditioned to serve food every time someone new entered the room. This would also be known as a conditioned response. James Frye and Tabitha Farley, the ones who helped with the event, were our reinforcers. Reinforcers are a stimuli that follows a behavior and increases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated. Whenever we were doing a good job, they would complement us and tell us to keep up our good work. This made us want to work harder and do better. Observational learning was also used in this. Observational learning is learning by observing other people’s behavior. We were showed where to put prearranged food, how much to put on the plates, and how to be sanitary around the food. Short term memory is briefly storing and processing information from our sensory registers. We used our short term memory by remembering what how much food goes where, and what to tell people when they’re confused on where to go and what to get. I’m majoring in social work and I found many things that linked this and my major together. I learned how to act in a setting with different types of people with different wants and needs.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
In Psychology there are many different learning styles. One of the more famous learning styles is operant conditioning. In operant conditioning there are two major concepts; reinforcement and punishment. By using these two concepts, behaviors can be encouraged or reduce a certain behavior. Next would be the different schedules of reinforcement that effect how often a behavior is likely to continue. Lastly the article goes on to state how behaviors can be shaped using these and other various methods.
The combination of class and service learning provided a solid foundation on which to be a morally responsible leader. During class, all sorts of ideas are brought up and discussed as a group and critically analyzing from different perspectives and relating it to other ideas. This enables the students rectify their own beliefs and morals in constructive ways. From these developments, we begin to see how it fits in the world and try to apply ourselves and gain wisdom. Gaining knowledge, experience and wisdom, it becomes our understanding to find good in any aspect of our lives and work towards advancing that good in a way that benefits all.
I have participated in various community service projects; for example one in which as a class
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
I volunteered at the Activity Center for my Service Learning project. My duties were to watch the kids who participated in the after school program, play with them and help them with their home homework. I really enjoyed interacting with the African-American people and culture. I learned many things from the African-American population I worked with. I learned how the Activity Center staff teaches the after school kids good manners and behavior. I mentioned in one of my service learning journals that the staff was very strict and treated the kids like prisoners, but I came to the realization that maybe that is how they teach the kids discipline. I had the opportunity to be around all the Activity Center kids and interact with them. They were kids just like any other kids. Of course they are kids and sometimes they did misbehave but overall they were really great kids. I noticed that most of the boys want to be more independent of them, but they were such sweet kids.
After completing the Interprofessional Service Learning modules I feel as I have gained more knowledge, experience, and values that I can take into my future professional career. IPE stands for interprofessional education and collaborative practice which per research studies are found to be very important when teaching pre-professional and professional graduates the importance of an interprofessional team, patient safety, ethics, and behavioral change. The first module we completed gave us an introduction and insight to the world and research behind the pros for implementing and educating health care professionals about IPE. The model specifically Grand Valley uses is the MIPERC model which is meant to be patient centered and has expected educational and health care outcomes for faculty and students to follow.
Last summer I got the opportunity for me and the entire cheer team to get community service hours from helping with the snow cone stand. I took the initiative and made a schedule for the cheerleaders to know what nights they were needed at the carnival. I enjoy helping with the carnival, mostly because my whole family does and the people in the fire department have became family. When I turn 18, I will become a volunteer fire fighter at Hebron, which will allow me to give back to my community. Not only did my Auto Tech class help me get a job, I also was able to compete in the SkillsUSA competitions.
Learning in its most basic form is our minds associating one thing with another. Digging deeper reveals that there are trends in how human beings and animals learn by association, usually this is done by a brain connecting one event to another. The two different ways a brain tends to learn is through either classical conditioning or operant conditioning. Classical conditioning is learning to associate one stimulus with another stimulus, and Operant Conditioning is learning by associating a response or behavior with a consequence. Knowing how people and animals learn is an important piece of knowledge if one is to help benefit the greater good.
What is the right age for age someone to start a service learning opportunity? Although service-learning opportunities are not usually available until college, service learning can have a major impact on high school students as well. The benefits from starting service learning at a young age include building team working skills, increased academic scores, and also building network opportunites. Service learning can become a valuable part of our youth’s future, and the earlier they begin learning, the more secure our nations future becomes.
When you mention spring break, you may think of droves of college students heading south for sun, fun and adventure. For 15 Dakota State University students, that is exactly what they intend to do, however it’s not exactly what one might consider. The next generation of DSU elementary teachers will take their classroom learning to Belize for a service-learning trip of a lifetime.
The aim of the box was to teach the rat in the box to press the lever by giving him food when he did. After spending some time inside the box, the rat realized that pressing the lever would bring him food, the reinforcement Skinner used. This experiment revealed another type of learning called operant conditioning, in which behavior is acquired because of the desired (or despised) consequences of the action. Operant conditioning is another confirmation that our brain determines our actions rather than our conscious control because the learning happens only because the results are somewhat pushing one to do the
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
Throughout this semester in my Human Services Skills and Methods class I have learned a tremendous amount about myself, the career I am choosing, and the clients that we serve. I learned what it takes to make a great leader, how to participate in a coalition, and what techniques to use within a counseling environment. All of these qualities that I have studied throughout the semester, are going to help me become a better Social Worker, and a better person within society. This class helped me stay motivated to do well in class and to keep my eyes fixed on my goals for my future career.
