“You are to write fourteen pages, and no less” he said as he gazed upon my class of approximately twenty-five students. His name was Robert Herber, and as my senior year English teacher at Bishop Fenwick High School, he changed the way I wrote forever. Prior to this point, writing never clicked with me, I never had that “oh, I get it now” moment that people often experience. I had been writing the same way for many years: terribly. My writing “clicked” my senior year of high school, all thanks to one teacher, and the scariest essay I have ever been assigned. I still remember the terrified look on everyone’s face when he initially explained our final paper. We just sat there, awestruck, thinking about the hell we are about to experience. Previous to this point, we had only written an eight page paper, and even that was a stretch. “If the paper isn’t at least fourteen pages or if there’s one formatting mistake you get an instant zero”. I was petrified beyond belief, because I knew I was screwed. “Just give me the zero now” I was thinking to myself as I sat there estimating what my final grade would be with a zero. The topic was to write about issues on an individual level that a considerable amount of people have dealt with, including issues such as bulimia, anorexia, and common superficial body issues. This isn’t just another paper I can write a mixture of rubbish about, I will actually have to do research from many different angles and have various sources. Preceding this point and time I, for the most part, had no idea how to take all of this varied research and put it into one free – flowing structure, nevertheless, I had to learn.
I guess it is true when people say “you have to start somewhere”, the only problem was, I had no...

...y senior year would end with great joy and pride. I remember thinking to myself when it was finished “I wrote this?” it was hard to believe how far I had come in such a short period of time. To this day I still start all of my papers the same way Mr. Herber taught me my senior year. A few days after I turned my paper we got our results back. I ended up getting an “A” and one of the best grades in my class. To this day that is still my most cherished paper I have ever written. Looking back at all my writings over the years, it is clear that all I needed to do was to simply start somewhere. We are all not born being the best of writers, but the best learn from their mistakes and evolve over time. Sometimes, all we need to be truly great at something is to experience a simple “click” in our minds that could change the way we see and process the world around us forever.
