After reading the story and your scholarly readings for the week, what advice would you give to any employer who is concerned about prejudice and discrimination in the workplace? Every individual in the workforce should be treated with equal rights. As an employer, any decision or plan for the company should be shared fairly among the employees, even if they are white, black, Jews, or any other race or religion. As long as the individual meet the required qualifications for the job and maintain a good background check, they should be able to join the team. I have known workers and managers to act different, ask a selected few, and/or leave black people out of a plan or certain activity within the company. Brief et. al. (2000) described the code phrase “lighting up the company” that was made by a company while trying to express the discrimination issue to another manager (Brief et. al., 2000). Observing or experiences one’s negative behavior or approach can affect that same race when other come in contact. In regard to the Tiffany’s company, just because the man was black, others caught an attitude or shared negative opinions when they seen or heard about his high achieving work. For example, some mangers and employees become frighten when they come in contact with black guys that wear baggy clothes and dreads. In reality, they think black guys are ready to rob, fight, and shoot. While in reality, they may be coming in the store to buy a belt for their pants, on the way to the barbershop to get their dreads treated. On the other hand, business owners that may have experiences a robbery from a black guy, may have his guard up every time black guys enter the store.
