After reading the story and your scholarly readings for the week, what advice would you give to any employer who is concerned about prejudice and discrimination in the workplace? Every individual in the workforce should be treated with equal rights. As an employer, any decision or plan for the company should be shared fairly among the employees, even if they are white, black, Jews, or any other race or religion. As long as the individual meet the required qualifications for the job and maintain a good background check, they should be able to join the team. I have known workers and managers to act different, ask a selected few, and/or leave black people out of a plan or certain activity within the company. Brief et. al. (2000) described the code phrase “lighting up the company” that was made by a company while trying to express the discrimination issue to another manager (Brief et. al., 2000). Overall, I would advise the employer to give everyone a fair chance, do not judge anyone based on …show more content…
Observing or experiences one’s negative behavior or approach can affect that same race when other come in contact. In regard to the Tiffany’s company, just because the man was black, others caught an attitude or shared negative opinions when they seen or heard about his high achieving work. For example, some mangers and employees become frighten when they come in contact with black guys that wear baggy clothes and dreads. In reality, they think black guys are ready to rob, fight, and shoot. While in reality, they may be coming in the store to buy a belt for their pants, on the way to the barbershop to get their dreads treated. On the other hand, business owners that may have experiences a robbery from a black guy, may have his guard up every time black guys enter the store. Based on race, I have been business owners to not provide the equal amount of services to certain individuals according to their
The issue of black success in a corporate world such as America is best understood as one of culture and ethnicity. Generally, success in business demands a certain personality and level of ability, just as does success in politics. A quick look at the current status quo of power and authority in the business world will prove that. But existing societal conditions remnant of the evil specter of slavery have created a persona within the common black identity that is fundamentally opposed to business success. Nagel writes: “Culture is constructed … by the actions of individuals and groups and their interactions within the larger societ...
In my opinion, it is important for private and public organizations to adopt and implement programs and laws to overcome the challenges in a diverse work environment. One of the laws that organizations follow are Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972. Equal Employment Act of 1972 prohibits discrimination of employment on the basis of race, color, nation, origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political , beliefs , and marital status. Another law that
Across the nation, millions of Americans of all races turn on the television or open a newspaper and are bombarded with images of well dressed, articulate, attractive black people advertising different products and representing respected companies. The population of black professionals in all arenas of work has risen to the point where seeing a black physician, attorney, or a college professor are becoming more a common sight. More and more black people are holding positions of respect and authority throughout America today, such as Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Condelezza Rice and many other prominent black executives. As a result of their apparent success, these black people are seen as role models for many Americans, despite their race. However, these groups of black people are exceptions to the rule and consist of only a tiny fraction of all black Americans. These black people in turn actually help to reinforce the inequality of black Americans by allowing Americans of other races to focus on their success. A common thought is, "They made it, why can't you do the same?" The direct and truthful answer to that question is Racism.
Institutionalized racism has been a major factor in how the United States operate huge corporations today. This type of racism is found in many places which include schools, court of laws, job places and governmental organizations. Institutionalized racism affects many factors in the lives of African Americans, including the way they may interact with white individuals. In the book “Drinking Coffee Elsewhere Stories” ZZ Packer uses her short stories to emphasize the how institutionalized racism plays in the lives of the characters in her stories. Almost all her characters experience the effects of institutionalized racism, and therefore change how they view their lives to adapt. Because institutionalized racism is a factor that affects how
Institutions in the businesses sector are swarming in racial discrimination, much of which is covert and difficult to detect and prove. Racial discrimination excludes, marginalizes and exploits those citizens who are discriminated against, ceasing any opportunity for economic progress and development. Under certain regulations some businesses are required to diversify their workplace by hiring certain amounts of people of color, but in reality these small quotas do not do much for the overall condition of the people who are being discriminated against. Businesses that fail to take action on racial discrimination tend to have lower levels of productivity. This stems from employees not being interested in working hard, or because people with exceptional talents and skills choose to shy away from certain places of employment due to the fear of racial discrimination. Employees who feel wronged also tend to switch jobs, forcing the organization to spend more time and resources on hiring and training new employees, besides coping with the low productivity of a new employee. (Nayab)The effects of racial discrimination in the American work force could be identified with funded research on the topic. With ample data employers will be able to better understand the negative affects that racial discrimination have
Though many may not want to believe it, young black men are stereotyped in the business world. These stereotypes can subconsciously cause disadvantages at the collegiate level, in internships and even at the professional level when competing for advanced positions. Sometimes, it is difficult for black males to receive positions over males of other races due to these stereotypes. Regardless of the fact that both may meet the qualifications, it is likely that the black male will fall short. Therefor, young black males must work twice as hard and go above and beyond just to ensure that we recieve the same opportunities as other males. Appearance also plays a major factor, when competing for high-level professional positions a black male with piercings or tattoos; which many young men have, may not represent the company ...
Discrimination against people due to their color has always been recognized in the workforce and has been dealt with accordingly by the law. It used to be the most well-known form of discrimination within the workforce. Today most companies have begun stating that they adhere to the law of equal employment opportunities for everyone, but them stating it is completely different to them actually practicing what they preach. For example, there is one ethnic group who companies have begun discriminating against since the attack of 911 on the twin towers. Muslims have been singled out as the bad guys by many, thus they have been treated as such. There was a case in which Ali Aboubaker, 56, was bullied and discriminated against at work due to his religion, race, and most importantly appearance. He kept a long beard that was long and unkempt, which resembled those worn by men from Afghanistan. The company seemed to forget that Ali had four college degrees and only seemed to pay attention to his physical demeanor. At times it was even noted that his coworkers called him a terrorist in front of his manager, and they were never reprimanded for it. Due to his appea...
In the today’s economy, the websites of professional businesses and organizations are a good example of segregation that has actually been expanding rather than shrinking. In fact, shockingly, most of these professional sites are “Black Only” instead of “White Only.” In the traditional era, segregation experienced in the United States in the organization only featured “White Only” and “Colored” signs hanging in shop windows, but now are declared “Black Only.” In this perspective, numerous organizations unanimously promote, hire and trade with other Blacks. These organizations are violating the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. among other brave black and white men who advocated for non-discriminating country (Orfield 64).
Prejudice and discrimination have both prevailed in human society since the beginning of civilization.Prejudice is the negative thought and discrimination is the further developed version of prejudice where one 's thoughts are put into action. Discrimination has always divided society as it makes one group seem they are better than another group. Prejudice and discrimination cause isolation, they lead to lack of diversity, and they result in loss of self esteem.
Racial discrimination in the labor market cost companies millions each year. Legal costs and a possible loss of development from the exclusion of a qualified employee are among the expenses faced by the company. For example, an employer can force qualified employees out of their positions. This can potentially cost the firm huge profits. Unfair treatment of employees can also lead to re...
Race conscientiousness is present in today’s society, many harbor negative feelings towards African Americans on an unconscious level, which can have a negative impact on the mental health of the person who are victims of this discriminatory behavior. The unintentional expression of anti-black feelings is projected on to blacks as fear or discomfort with their presence. According to Gaertner and Dovidio, two psychology professors, proposed “the biased judgments against African Americans result of childhood socialization of the dominant racial biases in society and from the typical way in which individuals categorize people into social groups rather than expend limited cognitive resources to judge each person individually” (Levin 2). I
Female nowadays face a lot of barriers. Discrimination exists in the society which impacts some aspects of everyday life like women being rejected in numerous opportunities. The idea of equality in gender and opportunity has been a discussion for a long time. Women have taken the role of being a housewife and a mother because it is viewed as their primary role, but women wanted to step out on their own and be independent. There is an arising number of women joining the workforce today. They are striving to get their equality and prove their place in the society because they are rarely recognized. Although they have come a long way, women continuously battle discrimination in the workplace because there is still separation of men and women in
Abstract- Racial discrimination happens all the time and most of us are unaware of it. The most common place for this to happen is in the workplace. Now people can be discriminated against because of their race, religion, or any other numerous things. Also, discrimination can occur during the job interview or even after you got the job. This paper will shoe the effects of racial discrimination and how it can be prevented. In addition there are some very important laws that deal specifically with discrimination, like the NAACP or Affirmative Action. These both will be discussed.
Frankly, when people hear or think of the word "discrimination"; they some times automatically assume it is a Black and White race issue. Contrary to the belief, discrimination is an unjust, unfair or unreasonable favoring of characteristics, such as race, sex, age, gender, caste or disability over another. The signs of discrimination can be subtle or bold, a statement or ruin gesture. Moreover, it can be an indirect or directed act towards women or men; as well as the young and the elderly.
Discrimination is a huge injustice and we need to all do something to end it. To fight discrimination we need to first maybe make laws and rules about it. The government only fixed it a little by letting other races join with the white in work, schools, etc. That didn't actually fix the problem though. People discriminate over another because they could be jealous or just not like them for a certain reason. Some don't even have certain reasons to hate another. Additionally, if I was the manager for a restaurant, and a black man came in, asking for a job. If I said no because of his race, that would be racial discrimination. Also, men and woman of today will discriminate over who's better or who can get jobs easier. Men and women should be
