The other day in my psychology class we were discussing the importance of mental health. My professor had made a comment that really got me thinking. He stated that there are a lot of people in this world who have what society deems necessary to be happy. They are physically healthy people, married, with steady jobs, living the American dream, but for some unknown reason they feel melancholy. Critically thinking, I was picking my brain for reasons why “successful” people could be unreasonably sad. Then I starting thinking about my own life. What keeps me sane? Religious people were more optimistic and felt that their lives had significant meaning. The more religious the person, the better the results. People from school three revealed that religious strength brought about positive attitudes about life’s adversities and those individuals had increased self-acceptance. Group two displayed that increased religious practices yielded the same results as group three in addition to reduced stress and anxiety. Other researchers discovered that people of strong faith had better self-esteems, were overall happier people, and had greater resilience to traumatic life experiences. Among hospice patients, some researchers found people deeply devoted to their faith had a better quality of life. Using the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORF) one study revealed that highly religious people have more self control and are not as vulnerable when working with others in comparison to those who are not religious. According to this article religiosity had a negative correlation to anxiety and depression. The students of mostly Baptist and Protestant faith practiced their religion the most and results displayed that they had the best mental health in comparison to the other students. Despite the fact that the correlation between mental health and religiosity was positive (.13-.37), this is still a new study and more research must be conducted before a definite answer is
