1. The Learner and Learning: Learner Development, Learning Differences, and Learning Environments
Throughout this course, I continually learned a great deal about managing student behaviors, not just in a special education setting, but in any setting. Having to develop my own personal philosophy for classroom management was interesting as I had never really thought of having a philosophy about this before, or at least had never written it out. Developing this philosophy helped me realize a lot about important things such as the arrangement of furniture in the classroom and the placement of desk. Learning about PBIS and then being able to see it put into action in the school I volunteered in just proved how these newer and more modern techniques work for students and teachers. Learning about formal and informal assessments and then putting the knowledge into action was helpful as it showed me the difference in the two and how each is unique depending on what you are assessing. Prior to this class I had very little knowledge about the discipline and suspension procedures involved with a student with disabilities. To be able to determine whether a student performed an action because of lack of implementation of the IEP or whether it was a direct relation to the disability or not is very fair for all students. Prior to these laws, students were disciplined unfairly and students were not protected by the laws. Learning about Cooperative Learning was probably my favorite assignment in this course. I have always been a big fan of group learning and being able to learn so much more about the dynamics of Cooperative learning and being able to compare it to Collaborative learning was very interesting to me. I am excited to do more training on cooperative learning techniques in order to implement them in my classroom someday.
In the category of Content Knowledge and Application of Content, I would rate myself as having an Acceptable level of skill. I feel that as I progress in my studies in this program and gain more experience in the classroom, I will progress in skill level. It is difficult to completely understand something until you can apply the knowledge about it. This is the biggest reason I am a fan of hands-on and group learning, because I learn better in that way and know that many others do as
