Domain 3 focuses on my ability to instruct. I am not as clear as I should be this year. My expectations are clearly stated and portrayed, but not my directions. For instance, in 3a, I would normally lead my students through a lesson expressing my expectations, explain the directions, and put the directions on the board. However, this year I haven’t. I am spending too much time with the three new science teachers. Furthermore, my students are lower this year than they have been in previous years. So, even if my directions are clear, modeled, and guided too many students are not comprehending the expectations. I am going to have to work harder to write directions on the board, hopefully this will help more students to meet the expectations of all lessons.
I could have marked myself as distinguished for 3b, the questioning and discussion techniques component; however, that mark would only be truth for less than 1/2 of my students.

Initially, I must state the context within which I have been working. The school I am based in is situated in urban area with just over three hundred children present. I am working in a year two class, consisting of thirty children. There is a broad range of abilities that presents its own challenges across the class, there is four SEN children to consider. For this lesson I still need to learn how to analyze instructional goals and differentiated instructional strategies. When I transfer to a university to further my education; in my educational classes I will learn about this. In addition to student teaching, I will be learning how to handle future situations with the appropriate grade level. Sean has just been hired as an assistant in an after-school program for a group of 5-7 years old children. After his first day in the class, he was concerned about some of the activities the leader had set out for the children. Sean was familiar with the guidelines for developmentally appropriate practice and though some of the activities were not age appropriate. The importance of having a curriculum that accommodates diverse learners, it allows the child to learn at their own level or ability. A child with emotional and intellectual challenges may not have the verbal or comprehension skills or the ability to control their body as their peers. With this in mind, classes with diverse learners can excel with an adjusted curriculum. An activity for example, using large Legos to teach the entire class their colors or numbers can help the intellectual challenge by asking to build a building by using on certain colors or amounts. Before the lesson is prepared, the teachers must have a clear understanding of the objectives of the lesson to be taught. By having an understanding of what they students will able to accomplish at the end of the lesson, the content remains focused and thorough. The teacher must then express these objectives to the students including the standards for performance. Students can then be held accountable for expectations that are known.
As a teacher it is important if not crucial to create a safe learning environment for students, especially students with disabilities. Most schools implement many services that are available in order to support students with mild-extreme disabilities without excluding them from the other students. The ‘least restrictive environment’ (educational psychology for learning and teaching) is an environment that is close to what students without disabilities learn in. However, depending on the severity of the disability, after school classes or sessions may be required. Depending on the primary school year level, some students may not even be aware that their fellow peer has a disability if the student has not been singled out as being disabled. To engage behavioural or disabled students in learning a good strategy is to accompany the main teacher with a teacher aide. In a class of 25 or so students, one teacher is not able to get around to each student individually. One-on-one interaction with student and teacher is highly beneficial with certain students. I work hard to make connections to my content knowledge with other subject areas through discussions with general education teachers for social studies and science curriculums (Danielson, 1996). As a special education teacher, I must have a full understanding of my students (Danielson, 1996).
