Personal Life In Nursing

For two years, now, I have put my personal life on hold to complete my associates in nursing. It wasn’t an easy decision for me, as I had never previously thought of myself as a nurse. A caretaker, maybe, but a nurse-someone who cares for the extremely ill and nurtures them back to health with compassion and love- that was too advanced for me. I decided to become a nurse only a few months before applying to college. I chose this profession because I have a real heart and passion for people. I knew that nursing would be hard and not as glorious and ivory towered as we all imagine (and hope for). On the other hand, families can be a great resource to the nurse if the patient has had a chronic illness (COPD for example). Families can provide medicine regimes, eating habits, exacerbation episodes, feedback on daily living habits and back story to what preceded the patient ending up the hospital. Also family members can provide something very vital to the patient, comfort. Families are meant to watch out for each other and with that in mind, I will try and remember that the next time I have to work with a family that is not so easy to work with. If it were my own family, perhaps they would act that way too, concerned for the health of the ailing person. Overall I believe in people. I believe in people’s ability to pull through anything, the human body is an amazing piece of finely tuned systems, that are constantly working together for the betterment of the whole body. Also, I believe in holistic care, a care that is rationale, compassionate, empathetic, practical, and honest.
