My passion for the environment stems from having developed an awareness of threats to the biosphere early on in life. As a vegetarian and devoted animal rights advocate, I began the expansion of my knowledge by taking time to read about the impacts of the meat industry on the environment. From there, I broadened my research to look at other factors contributing to issues such as climate change, scarcity of resources, ozone layer depletion, etc. Having lived in California my whole life leading up to my college career, I 've seen firsthand the consequences of these issues and how they affect our daily lives. Global Marine Systems is a course in which I could take advantage of the unique subjects offered at Otago. This would also feed into my interest in the environment and help me to make connections between marine and terrestrial elements. Along with the academics that the University of Otago has to offer, there is a multitude of student clubs and organizations that would give me the opportunity to get involved on campus and meet other students with similar interests to my own. Although not located right by the mountains, Otago’s Snow Sports Club would provide me with the opportunity to take regular trips to the mountains and ski alongside my peers. Another subject in which I would like to get involved is animal rights. With groups including the Otago Student Animal Legal Defence Fund and the Veganism and Animal Rights Society, I would have countless opportunities to work with fellow students to promote animal welfare and be a part of a cause that I strongly believe in. After deeply researching what the University of Otago has to offer, I believe this program caters to both my academic and personal interests.
