Before I can begin to speak on how I would create my new school called the Rutledge Academy, I first must find out what is necessary in my school to foster a better learning environment and promotion of growth and maturity. We have to ask ourselves first the inevitable question, and that is what intelligence is exactly before we can begin to teach others, especially young children how to utilize it within themselves and apply it to their world today. The textbook definition of intelligence describes it as “the capacity to understand the world, think with rationality, and use resources effectively when faced with challenges” (Corey, Schneider-Corey, Callanan, 2011, p. 247). With that definition to give us the foundation for a structured school, we know what intelligence is so now we have to apply it with concepts of a traditional nature and with psychologist Howard Gardner’s eight distinct intelligences for our school and for this paper.
Throughout the years there have been gauges or tests to categorize and group children based off of their intelligence levels such as psychologist Alfred Binet’s intelligence test. Binet’s method of testing have paved the way and set the example for the way intelligence is measured and helped established what is called the intelligence quotient or I.Q. that is being used today. After Binet’s testing, there have been many other I.Q. tests throughout the years such as the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition (SB5) a spin-off if you will of Alfred Binet’s original testing format, just Americanized and based off of the age of the recipient. The reason for that is for auxiliary usage and assistance with other teachers in case of an emergency or sickness in their families’ one teacher could teach another class or intelligence in the absence of another. I would require that these teachers also have associates degrees at a minimum and possess the ability to speak two or more languages or be a linguist or bilingual. Each student and each person possesses all of Gardner’s intelligences but in my school it would be a point of pride to bring out the power that these children possess. “If teachers can determine the intelligences (enhanced abilities) in each child and then teach to those enhanced abilities, the child will learn better” (Adcock, 2014, p. 51).
