“My Mother at Sixty-Six” should be introduced in Engl-103 because it teaches the students the value of time and time management for them. Time is really a wonderful thing. It is satisfactory as it has no beginning or ending. All the things are born in time, grow in time, decay in time, and die in time. Time moves at its own pace and cannot be according to anybody’s will. Time does not wait for the president of any country, or citizen of any country; time has no pity for either rich or poor. Time can neither be analysed nor criticised. Time management is basically planning and controlling the amount of time spent of specific activities. Lines: “all I did was smile and smile and, / smile…..”(23-24) tell us that when the poet was at the airport and looked at her mother, she didn’t want her mother to see that she was crying inside, she put up a fake smile on her face just for her mother. The poem is a sentimental account of mother’s approaching end through the eyes of her daughter. The poet uses comparison to express her feelings. “Looked out at Young/ Trees sprinting, the merry children spilling” (12-13). These lines describe the scene that the poet watches outside the window. Young children signify the joy and liveliness of youth which seems to be in sharp contrast with the unhappy mood inside the vehicle. Mother can be portrayed as school and the student as the poet. The poet regrets for not spending time with her mother. This is her failure. It makes her realize the importance of time. In the same way students can relate themselves with the poem. Not all students regret. But those who don’t attend class and skip lectures. The poem is an example of consequence than can occur. In the poem the poet wants to spend time but her mother won’t have much time left. Same situation is true when it is related to their lives. Some students don’t study whole year and get depressed at the end of the year when exams is about to come. Not giving importance to time and use that time to study is a failure for them. Looking back to the poem, you see a similar aspect of life. The poet feels regret which reminds her of her failure i.e. not spending time with her mother, when she had time. Lines; “Driving from my parent’s / home to Cochin last Friday” (1-2) tell us that poet is busy in her life and does not live with her parents. She might be busy due to her work or any personal reasons. She fails to manage time between her mother and her busy life. Now her mother is old and soon she will die. This teaches students a lesson about managing time. Students get busy in their life. There is a lot work to do. Some just study and score well but don’t have a social life. Some just have fun and don’t study. Students may choose not to attend class due to incompatible goals, motivations, or expectations which are distracting them from education. (Rochford, 2001). The outcome for them is their bad grades. A study conducted with ninety students showed a positive result. Ninety students completed a time-management survey in 1983. Their SAT scores were obtained from their respective institutes. After four years in 1987 their grade point average (GPA) was obtained from college records. Analysis of this information showed that the time management components were responsible for this result. It was concluded that time management practices influenced college grades of students. These lines demonstrate the stage of adulthood and the daily challenges that a person is faced with. The allusions in the poem enrich the meaning of the poem and force the reader to become more familiar with all of the meaning hidden behind the words. For example, she uses words such as innocence, imprisonment and captive to capture the feelings experienced in each of the stages. The form of the poem is open because there are no specific instances where the lines are similar. The words in each stanza are divided into each of the three growth stages or personal experiences.
The confronting theme of life is shown through poetic techniques in the poems, Pieta and November. The cycle of life is shown through Pietà and November in two different ways. The child’s life is unfortunately cut short as it, ‘only [lives] one day.’ Whilst in November, the subject of the poem is about a Grandmother who is at the end of the cycle of life. This is unlike the baby in Pietà who is not able to live, or have a chance of living a long life. This may cause the audience to ponder about the purpose of life. Armitage uses consonantal alliteration and visual imagery, in ‘sun spangles,’ to symbolise that, ‘the only thing you can get, out of this life,’ is the beautiful happy moments. This logic is true for many non-believers as the purpose of life is unknown to them and the only positive reason for life is by creating happy memories.In November,the last moments of life are shown through the enjambment and flow. The audience is involved with the journey of bringing the woman to the hospital as if you are, ‘with your grandma taking four short steps to [your] two.’ This is effective as the audience can put themselves in the place of the narrator in the story.This is unlike Pieta which is written in past tense and is not able to put themselves in the place of mother but the audience is more sympathetic towards the mother and her loss of her child.

Any interpretation of this story is due to the reader’s personal emotions and feelings toward his or her own Papa. This story can be either a dance between him and his father, thus bringing them closer together. However, there is a darker side of this poem, on this side it is an unsettling fight between a boy and his drunken father and all the intimacy of the dance does not make an impression on the reader and is overshadowed by the anger they feel.
Connie Fife is a Saskatchewan, Cree poet who writes using her unique perspective, telling of her personal experiences and upbringing. This perspective is revealed to her audience through the poems “This is not a Metaphor”, “I Have Become so Many Mountains”, and “She Who Remembers” all of which present a direct relationship to her traditional background and culture (Rosen-Garten, Goldrick-Jones 1010). To show the relationship of her experiences through her poetry, Fife uses the form of dramatic monologue, as well as modern language and literal writing to display themes about racism presenting her traditional viewpoint to her audience.
When sorting through the Poems of Dorothy Parker you will seldom find a poem tha¬t you could describe as uplifting or cheerful. Sylvia Plath was known as an American Poet, Novelist and Shorty story writer. However, Plath lived a melancholic life. After Plath graduated from Smith College, Plath moved to Cambridge, England on a full scholarship. While Plath was Studying in England, she married Ted Hughes, an English poet. Shortly after, Plath returned to Massachusetts and began her first collection of poems, “Colossus”, which was published first in England and later the United States. Due to depression built up inside, Plath committed suicide leaving her family behind. Sylvia Plath was a gifted and troubled poet, known for the confessional style of her work, which is how “Mirror” came to be. Although this poem may seem like the reader is reading from first person point of view, there is a much deeper meaning behind Plath’s message throughout the poem. Plath uses several elements of terror and darkness to show change to the minds of the readers.
While reading the poem the reader can imply that the father provides for his wife and son, but deals with the stress of having to work hard in a bad way. He may do what it takes to make sure his family is stable, but while doing so he is getting drunk and beating his son. For example, in lines 1 and 2, “The whisky on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy” symbolizes how much the father was drinking. He was drinking so much, the scent was too much to take. Lines 7 and 8, “My mother’s countenance, Could not unfrown itself.” This helps the reader understand the mother’s perspective on things. She is unhappy seeing what is going on which is why she is frowning. Although she never says anything it can be implied that because of the fact that the mother never speaks up just shows how scared she could be of her drunk husband. Lines 9 and 10, “The hand that held my wrist Was battered on one knuckle”, with this line the reader is able to see using imagery that the father is a hard worker because as said above his knuckle was battered. The reader can also take this in a different direction by saying that his hand was battered from beating his child as well. Lastly, lines 13 and 14, “You beat time on my head With a palm caked hard by dirt” As well as the quote above this quote shows that the father was beating his child with his dirty hand from all the work the father has
In a typical family, there are parents that expected to hear things when their teenager is rebelling against them: slamming the door, shouting at each other, and protests on what they could do or what they should not do. Their little baby is growing up, testing their wings of adulthood; they are not the small child that wanted their mommy to read a book to them or to kiss their hurts away and most probably, they are thinking that anything that their parents told them are certainly could not be right. The poem talks about a conflict between the author and her son when he was in his adolescence. In the first stanza, a misunderstanding about a math problem turns into a family argument that shows the classic rift between the generation of the parent and the teenager. Despite the misunderstandings between the parent and child, there is a loving bond between them. The imagery, contrasting tones, connotative diction, and symbolism in the poem reflect these two sides of the relationship.

This task was extremely vital to him, and it was left uncompleted. The reason that the boy could not get to Araby on time was because his uncle arrived home late, because he had forgotten about him. That was a very cruel thing to do knowing how important this was for his nephew, he reminded his uncle many times. The uncles response was “ The people are in bed and after their fist sleep now( )”. The motif of decay is seen in some symbolism too. The apple tree in the wild garden is symbolic to the tree of knowledge. However, the tree in the story is wild, meaning that knowledge is limited in the neighborhood. For example, when the previous owner, the priest, of the boy’s house had died, he had given all his money to charity and left his sister with nothing but old and used furniture.
These six poems all vary in tone and messages yet all connect to death. Every parent in this world loves their children more than anything. Even the children can’t stay away from their parents for so long. Nothing in this world could be more precious than the love of a parent has for his/her children. Our parents are always with us no matter what happens. Often in life we make mistakes, but our parents give us supports and teach us to learn from those mistakes and move on with our lives. They also try to teach us from their experience. Parents always make sacrifices to provide for their family. In the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Huges and “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the poets talk about how the parents are always making sacrifices to make their children’s life a little bit easier. Both of these poems reveal the struggle the parents go through in order to provide for their family.
Katherine Philip’s “Epitaph,” written in a couplet form, is memorializing her firstborn son who only lived less than six weeks after he was born. In this poem Katherine Philips is desperately trying to renew her faith in life, but she is struggling to do so because of the death of her son. She is attempting to justify the loss of her child, but is also questioning whether there is even a reason for hope. “What on earth deserves our trust?” If you cant trust anything then you have to rely on faith. Even things that we know as certain, like the sun rising in the morning, Katherine seems to not trust, “And so the Sun if it arise…” The “if” implies such a strong sense of doubt that it clearly emphasizes Philip’s struggling attempt to renew her faith in life.
One used to have trouble with time management. One used to go to brother’s football game or practice, mom’s choir practice, extracurricular activities, etc. instead of staying home and studying. One did not make better choices. As a result of one having poor time management, one’s grades started to go down hill; all of one’s grades. Not just in World Literature, but all of one’s grades.
