In this assignment, I will be talking about a misunderstanding that I have experienced that is business- or work-related rather than a personal example. I will also be identifying the receiver and the sender of the misunderstood message, the communication channel that was used to deliver the message, what caused the misunderstanding, and how I could have avoided it overall. In this situation, the misunderstanding that I have experienced in a work-related example would be when I worked at Wal-Mart and was setting up a display feature for a holiday season. One has to work hard to consider their values in particular issues and how strongly they feel. This is the choice many people make when they invest in mutual funds, and have no idea where their mutual funds are invested. Many vocal opponents to shopping at Wal-Mart might discover they hold investments in the Wal-Mart. There are 1050 mutual funds that are invested in Wal-Mart, some of the largest mutual funds in the world. There are many people who have no idea where their investments lie. If you want to be true to your value against shopping at Wal-Mart, you need to be careful to remove yourself from investments that support Wal-Mart. You have to review your investments and find out where your money is invested.

If Wal-Mart has such little regard for their own employees, it would make it difficult for a company to have minimal regard to where their merchandise is coming from. On the documentary, The High Price of Low Cost, informs of the countries and Wal-Mart’s effects on these countries, including its presence for manufacturing in China. The workers work in conditions of extreme temperatures from morning until dawn and provided boarding, which is shared with several others and lined with bunk beds. The board and utilities are deducted from their wages even if the workers choose not to stay on the facilities the board is still deducted from their pay. These workers that are looking for employment to make a better future for their families are provided wages of as little as $3 per day.
Miscommunication is a struggle that lives within the world everyday. Being able to understand what another person is trying to convey is an essential part of the way humans interact with one another. When a message is not translated correctly from person to person conflict arises and heated battles rage within a relationship; whether it is a mother and daughter, or two quarreling lovers, or strangers upon the street. All humans are created differently, with diverse upbringings, perspectives, and mindsets. Particular forms of communications may mean different things to various people. When talking about the concept of miscommunications, one must also address the concept of communication itself.

Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari is a seasonal theme and water park located in Santa Claus, Indiana. This is also an organization which I have previously worked at for six seasons. Having a slogan of “Number 1 for Family Fun!,” Holiday World strives to provide for their guests two affordable theme parks with a fun and family oriented environment. They also pride themselves on having world-class rides and entertainment, free soft drinks, friendly employees, immaculately clean grounds, and providing outstanding service. Holiday World offers a variety of full-time and seasonal job opportunities which are broken down into different departments. Some of these departments include admissions, entertainment, food and beverage, grounds, lifeguards and slide attendants, maintenance, security, and rides. This report will focus on the food and beverage department. The work environment for food and beverage employees can often be hectic and stressful. Employees are expected to serve quality food to thousands of guests each day in a timely and efficient manner. At the same time, employees must also maintain Holiday World’s reputation as the friendliest and cleanest park in the world. Effectively being able to work in teams plays a huge role in this department.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
