Relationships are a concept that everyone can relate to. In two literary works, My Life with the Wave and The Ice Man they both have plots that revolve around relationships, however the stories themselves are quite different. In order to analyze and compare them one needs to understand both of the stories.
My Life with the Wave is a short literary work about a man, the narrator who falls in love with a wave, a woman and however the woman changes after being with him. She feels unsatisfied with just the narrator and eventually starts to have affairs with other men. The protagonist is upset with the women having affairs and tries to fiend off her lovers. In the Ice Man, the narrator quotes, “All the South Pole people like him a lot, and they couldn’t understand a word I said. With white breath and frosty faces they talked, joked around, and sang songs in that distinctively spirited language of theirs.” The narrator is jealous that her husband is liked by others, but the others aren’t willing to try to speak with her. She eventually tries to learn the local language, however it seemed pointless. This jealously was rather mild compared to what was exhibited in My Life with the Wave. Narrator quotes “One day I couldn’t stand it any more; I threw open the door and launched after them.” The them is reference to the woman’s other lovers. From the statement one can assume that the narrator attacked lovers. Similarities of the stories can also be found from the characters. For example, both the narrator in the Ice Man and the narrator in My Life with the Wave are both curious about their prospective partner. In the beginning of the Ice Man, the narrator mentions her interest in the Ice Man and bluntly states, “I had to talk to him.” This goes to show her curiosity in the Ice Man. While in My Life with the Wave, the narrator initially showed disinterested in the woman, but later was curious about her.
