Chapter Six Discussion Paper If I had to choose one major life event that has shaped my development, I would have to say it was my parents getting divorced. While it didn’t initially affect me too much at the time, as far as I can remember, it completely changed the way I was being raised at the time and who was influencing me. While I am not sure how someone else in my position would have reacted, I think divorced parents has become a norm in our society and I would say that is something kids are usually able to adapt to. For most of my childhood my mother was a working single parent, doing her best and doing as much as she could to provide for us. My mom and I became incredibly close during this time and I really came to respect that she didn’t have to rely on anyone else to help her and that is something I work towards now that I have gotten older. My family structure was very solid at my father’s house, both my father and step mother worked, and they were also very supportive and helped me over a few social issues I had as a child. Religion also shaped my socialization heavily. Going to church taught me how to interact with others with very good manners and morals and also how to respect others and the world around me. While I don’t keep up with going to church regularly now that I am older, it was so ingrained into me as a child I still have very strong faith and religion will always be a big part of my life. Coming from different social structures at the same time with different environments when I was going back and forth between my parents, showed me very different ways of living and to try and see things through different perspectives. Most of these agents of socialization I have come to realize on my own, however, after reading this chapter a few things really clicked for me that I had not realized affected me so
