Chapter Six Discussion Paper If I had to choose one major life event that has shaped my development, I would have to say it was my parents getting divorced. While it didn’t initially affect me too much at the time, as far as I can remember, it completely changed the way I was being raised at the time and who was influencing me. While I am not sure how someone else in my position would have reacted, I think divorced parents has become a norm in our society and I would say that is something kids are usually able to adapt to. For most of my childhood my mother was a working single parent, doing her best and doing as much as she could to provide for us. My mom and I became incredibly close during this time and I really came to respect that she didn’t have to rely on anyone else to help her and that is something I work towards now that I have gotten older. My family structure was very solid at my father’s house, both my father and step mother worked, and they were also very supportive and helped me over a few social issues I had as a child. Religion also shaped my socialization heavily. Going to church taught me how to interact with others with very good manners and morals and also how to respect others and the world around me. While I don’t keep up with going to church regularly now that I am older, it was so ingrained into me as a child I still have very strong faith and religion will always be a big part of my life. Coming from different social structures at the same time with different environments when I was going back and forth between my parents, showed me very different ways of living and to try and see things through different perspectives. Most of these agents of socialization I have come to realize on my own, however, after reading this chapter a few things really clicked for me that I had not realized affected me so
A person does not experience many events that shape their life in a large way, whether it be for better or worse. I have had just one major situation that has sculpted me into the person that I am today. In February of 2008, I was diagnosed with a life changing disease; it would relieve me of the agony I had been experiencing for as long as I could remember, but also restrict my diet for the rest of my life.
The second family that I interviewed was the Lyles family. Both Bro. Scotty, the father, and Mrs. Yolanda, the mother, participated in the interview and three of their children were in the room. Bro. Scotty was born and raised in Alba, Texas on the very same tree farm that he owns and operates today; he is also a deacon at our church. However, Mrs. Yolanda was born and raised in Guatemala. As a child she was raised Catholic, and is part of a large and growing family. She is one of eight children. Their family as well as anybody else in that culture celebrated their daughter’s 15th birthday with a Quinceañera which marked the transition from childhood to young womanhood. First is my childhood and how it affected me growing up. The ones who affected me the most were my friends and family.Why they were such a major impact is because they are always there for me. My most life changing experience was when I moved from the sunny skies of North Carolina to The Blizzard, more formally known as Germany in the middle of my second grade year. My Step-Dad was active duty in the military. Of course, he had to drag us with him. He flew out to Germany first so for about three weeks it was just Mom and I. Just about every day Mom would say “Two more weeks till Germany, Tarix”, “One more week till Germany, Tarix” (Rich), which I never took to heart. I was too caught up in deciding what my Barbie was going to wear that day and riding my new tricycle to have time to process her words. Ignorance was bliss until the movers came to our house and packed up all my memories into big brown boxes. The night before
The moment in time when I realized that I was never going to have a Father like the rest of my friends changed the course of my life. As a young boy it was difficult coming home after a baseball game where each of my friends dads were there to cheer them on. I was left with the Father that was incapable of working or even getting himself out of bed. My fathers illness showed me to never take life for granted because one day your life can be normal and another day you're best days have already past.
The things that impact you can be bad or good, depending on your situation and how severe they were to you personally. I’ve been through many hardships and great things. Things like, being beaten as a child, raped, enduring racism, placed into the system and taken back out after a year or so, dropped out of college, overall failed at life so far; Went to a job where I worked hard, learned things about life, working hard, and that you can get more out of life if you want it, you can get more, you can be more, that there is an upside to every bad situation, and that other people are just that, real people. These things that have happened to me personally have shaped a lot of my personality and my outlook on life. Things that make you realize that other people go through events and have issues I believe are the things that make you an adult. This event for me was when I was working at EPB and really went through life every day with people of so many different ages and seeing the very real things that trouble them and let them enjoy things. This comradery as well as a want for everyone around you to be better and do better made me realize that everyone is going through the constant struggle I was. It wasn’t anything incredible or anything that made me realize it, but it changes everything on how you look at things and how you take in how other people act. I believe that
After reviewing my life, I have decided my life defining moment was when my family and I moved to Texas from Oklahoma. I consider this move my life changing moment because it changed so many things in my life. This move set the stage for an entirely new life for me. Moving six hours away from the only home I knew certainly called for many changes.
There have been many events in my life that have impacted me, but one stood out the most. When I was in fifth grade, I started to notice a change in my everyday life. On a daily basis, I experienced symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, exhaustion, and the feeling of being in a dream, or physically detached from the world. These symptoms did not really affect me much until about sixth grade, in sixth grade it really started to take an impact on my life. It took several visits to the doctor to finally figure out what was going on, but once we found the cause I was able to adjust my lifestyle to prevent it. The whole process was, honestly, traumatic but I can happily say that through it,
When I decided to interview my mom I took a different approach to family history. My interview with my mom gave me insight to an entirely new way of thinking about what family history consists of. She recorded a baby book and so much more from my childhood. She felt it was important to record the monumental moments in my childhood so she could share them with me later on and so I could share these moments with my children and so on.
My family consists of five children, which today is considered a large family. Of the five I am the youngest by six years. My parents were married for twenty-eight years before they decided that divorce was the only solution. I was fourteen years old and the one child that suffered the most emotional damage. Because of the many years my parents were married and the wide age difference between my siblings and myself I was the only child still living at home with my parents. The day my dad decided to move out was the day my life changed forever.
For example, when my mother and my father were separated, this influence their behavior towards each other as well as my own behavior towards both parents. Despite the fact that I was still very young, I knew what was happening and this event certainly affected my life.
As we grow up everyday, we find out who we are by our interests and usually those are what impact us the most. As for me, I am still discovering my likes and dislikes. The biggest impact in my life is my best friend and right hand, my mama. Since the day i was born she's always been there for me no matter what. Why my mom is my impact is because she is one of the most supportive,loving,and honest people you will ever meet.
Family structure can greatly impact the day-to-day activities of a family. A family with one parent may have a very different dynamic than one with two parents, or possibly even more parents. It is no surprise that these differences exist and families and that one’s family impacts their way of life. However, does it make a significant difference? Or is it simply a difference in how people react to their situations. That is what I wanted to learn from this assignment.
Many changes for the good and some were bad but, there were some learning experiences that help make me a better person. The events in my life, was dealing with the Birth and The Death of my first daughter.
After writing about my history and the themes I selected, I have learned a lot about who I am in society. I have realized that I am an average girl that has not experienced much of life. During this analysis I have come to realize I have not had much contact with other family types or other cultures.
