“Choose something that you’re good at.” This was the advice given to me by my mom before applying to college. “Choose a major that will get you a good job, but also something that you like.” These are the words that came out of her mouth; these are words that say one thing but really mean another.
Growing up with Vietnamese parents who escaped the Vietnam War, I never forgot the pressure they put on me as a young girl to do well in school, get good grades, and to achieve the “American Dream.” They wanted to be sure that I would not have to struggle financially like they did when they first came to America. After doing my research on how NU and other institutions figure my discipline, I’ve concluded that all these universities are putting forward a curriculum that is catered to my interests on the surface level. However, the point of getting an education in this day and age is to prepare us for the work force, to be “successful” and to uphold the names of the institutions in which we came from. A Public Relations worker’s media pay is: $57,550. An Event Planner’s median pay is: $45,260. Of course, last but not least, a person working in sales will make anywhere up to $87,000 (onedayonejob.com). The fact that there are articles written on this topic of what we can do with a major not in the classical fields tells me that there are huge problems at hand.
