My Learning: Past, Present, and Future
When you step back and look at the big picture of life, you will notice that the concept of learning plays an essential role in it. What you learn and how you learn is your key to life success and it can open a multitude of doors for you along the way. Learning, however, is routine and much like other activities that are routine such as brushing your teeth or eating meals, you begin to think less and less about what you are doing or how you have been doing it. I never actually put too much thought into how I learned or the origins of my learning experience, but after reflecting on the ideas I have been able to clearly identify the manners in which I have learned and how I can transform my learning experience to put me on track to how I want to learn in the future.
My learning experience began much earlier than most. When I was two, I had an older sister who was four and in kindergarten. Every day when she came home from class, she liked to play a game called “school” where I was the student and she taught me everything she learned that day. Not only did I gain knowledge that allowed me to be enrolled in school a year earlier than most children, but it helped me develop curiosity for learning and a passion for it as well. This curiosity and this passion are recognized by Angela Maiers, an accomplished educator and speaker, as habitudes in her essay “Habitudes in the Classroom.” These habitudes, she suggests, are essential for a positive learning experience and I was able to acquire these at a young age. This set me up for success in my early years and I was able to accomplish a great deal. I was eager and passionate about becoming smarter, so I did my best in school. This wasn’t exactly hard ...

...aterial on a deeper than surface level. My attitude towards my education is going will consist of nothing less than positivity, persistence, and eagerness to learn.
A positive learning experience is essentially what I am trying to get out of the next four years of my schooling, and even beyond that. Though I started off with strong “habitudes” at the beginning of my education, I eventually fell victim to strategic learning and became too caught up in receiving good grades. A growth mindset, however, recognizes that not everything is permanent and I still have the time to change my learning habits with the help of the Honors Mindset Seminar. By applying what I learn from the various excerpts we read throughout this course to my education, I know that I can leave this university in four years with a deep-rooted education and the skills I need to be successful in life.
