Part two introduction
I will now discuss my learning and professional development during the project discussed in part one. I will also discuss my leadership skills, relating this to relevant theory. Next, I will discuss situations that arose which encouraged me to reflect on my leadership skills. Finally, I will discuss how leading the project developed me as a leader.
My vision
Previously, at a meeting with staff, I discussed my vision for the project. Although all staff seemed keen on implementing the change it soon became apparent that they were not as enthusiastic as me. Through informal discussions with staff, it became clear they felt that they were working towards my vision and not a shared vision as I had not given them the opportunity

Prior to the implementation of change, I regularly adopted a pacesetting and democratic leadership style as defined by Goleman (2000). I was a systematic worker, as defined by Aubrey et al (2012), preferring to carry out tasks independently. That ensured tasks were always completed effectively and to a high standard. Furthermore, I continually listened to the staff’s views and involved all staff in decision making. On reflection, (Schon, 1983) I was aware that these leadership styles would not be effective throughout this project as it was important for decisions to be made quickly and for the workload to be minimal. I feel that the use of distributed leadership as defined by Harris and Spillane (2008) worked to an advantage for both me as a leader, and to the project. My workload was lessened by sharing leadership roles within the staff team. Furthermore, staff was given the opportunity to make their own decisions related to their tasks. My learning experience within inter-professional was very productive. I personally learned about working in collaboration with other professionals. My first impression was the first seminar which took place in the auditorium with a group of students from different professionals in health care sector. The actual seminar was a very good preparation for me and everyone who is in health professionals. The seminar gave me a very understanding of my future practice. It prepared me well on what to expect as I was not aware of the purpose of mixing different students from different professionals. The intention of this written essay is to demonstrate an understanding of my views on reflection and the issues surrounding reflective practice. It is based on nursing skills that I used during my practice placement, most importantly reflecting on the professional value of privacy and dignity.
I went into my educational experience with a wealth of background knowledge about a wide range of topics related to academics, relationships, athletics, and religion. I grew up in a small South Carolina town on a block where there were 48 children who played between the backyards and the park across the street. During the summer, we did not come inside until the street lights came on, and we played kickball, basketball, and baseball regularly. The experiences gained through years of education has taught me extensively not only about the world around me, but also who I am as a person and how I have grown through the years. These experiences have shown me many aspects of myself such as my talents and affinities towards certain subjects of studies, as well as the weaknesses I have towards other fields of research. What I have learned is my talents with logical and mathematical thinking have led me to pursue and challenge myself with subjects following mathematics and the different sciences. However, my affinity towards logical thinking has also caused my ability in liberal arts such as English and the different types of arts to fall to the wayside and become much more difficult for me to comprehend. This issue has lead me to find that learning by both practicing the problems as well as seeing written explanations has lead me to see how I learn and process information.
From the lessons, I have been able to understand various methods and procedures in managing a project team. My lecturer gave a brief introduction of the topics which are going to be discussed in the 2nd course “Managing the Project team”. In addition to recognizing the importance of work-life balance, the program also helped me nurture skills that are crucial in the promotion of an effective balance between work and other aspects of life. As I was going through the program, I was able to balance my commitments in the program with my personal life. This helped me to reduce stress and so I approached my responsibilities positively and with great energy. Furthermore, valuable tips on how to maintain proper work-life balance including the need to exercise and meditate, not to seek perfectionism, to always have a schedule and adhere to it, and ensure I stay healthy.
Personal Development is a lifelong process that involves the assessment of current skills and talents and the enhancement of oneself based on that assessment which then leads to the realization of goals and an improved quality of life. To be able to assess yourself, you need to be able to reflect on your past which helps you to understand the attitudes you have developed and the foundation that you will be building your life on. Also, you have to reflect on your present to see if there’s room for improvement and reflect on your future so that you can achieve your aspirations.
