My Journal on the Book, The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Journal 1 The first chapter of “The Maze Runner” really gets me excited for the rest of the book. I enjoy how it leaves the reader plenty of room to wonder what will happen later in the book. It has an interesting vocabulary that includes some of the slang words that the people of the glade made up. It seems that the plot of the book will quicken very quickly as already there is a lot of foreshadowing hinting toward some unknown beast and a giant maze. I predict that Thomas’s arrival will trigger some sort of issue that he will have to resolve. Just the first chapter has gotten me very excited for the rest of the book. Journal 2 It seems like I was right about the plot thickening quickly. Already Thomas has made an enemy, a boy named Gally. Apparently Gally has seen Thomas before and thinks he is bad news. Also Thomas begins to learn more about the creatures called the grievers. Apparently a boy named Ben was stung by one of these creatures. According to Chuck he will not die just go through an extremely painful process called the changing. Thomas decides that he wants to go see Ben and try to get some answers from Alby and Newt. He goes to where Ben is being held and walks in to find Ben in withering pain. His veins are a sickly green color and Ben is screaming. Newt then gets very mad because newbies are not allowed to see anybody go through the changing. Just seeing it makes Thomas very sick to his stomach so he leaves before anything worse happens. Journal 3 As Chuck and Thomas walk towards the Homestead Chuck decides to play a practical joke on someone using the bathroom. Apparently he's done it before, but this time it was Gally in the bathroom. Chuck knocked on the window so Gally would look out it to see who was... ... middle of paper ... ... able to get the Serum and will most likely die. Thomas is taught a pretty important distinction. The Grievers always show up at night, but that doesn't mean they never come out during the day. Minho begins to paint a pretty sad picture, and no matter how many suggestions Thomas comes up with, Minho is able to say either why it won't work or shut it down because they've tried it before and failed. They drag Alby closer to the door, so that the Baggers will be able to find his body in the morning. Minho admits that he's never been this scared. They have no hope of survival. That's when they hear the noise. It's a constant whirring that sounds like knives being struck together, followed by a series of clicks and moans. Minho abruptly runs off into the dark, and tells Thomas that they need to split up to increase their chances. His only advice is to just keep moving.
