Reflection On Social Work

This semester of my senior year in the Bachelors of Social Work program, I am both excited and nervous about my internship placement with New Century Hospice. New Century Hospice is a company that strives to provide the best quality of life for the patients and their families during a difficult time. My initial reaction to hearing about my placement was a little discouraging; I felt as though I already knew what hospice had to offer because of my personal experience that I shared with the passing of grandmother in 2008, when she was placed in hospice care. Due to the lack of education of hospice care, I knew that I had to remain open-minded and look at this internship as an opportunity to broaden my level of think from student social worker’s perspective. Due to this declined, it is not safe for him to live alone without a caregiver. Also, when conversing with the client often times it is difficult to understand what he is attempting to communicate because he does not speak very clearly, this will be considered a limitation because he cannot communicate his needs; the caregiver has to use her best judgment to assess his needs. However, dementia isn 't often diagnosis in your early 50 's, if this client would have shown these types of behavior 's in his 70 's it would more likely be considered as normal. This is why you have to remain self-aware, Walsh defines self-awareness as a process in which social workers continuously monitor how they are thinking, feeling, and behaving in the workplace, and how those activities are related to their general lives(Walsh, 2009).
