When I was younger, my hero was Dale Earnhardt. Coming from nothing, Earnhardt quickly rose through the ranks to become a champion. He was a stock car driver who consistently pushed the boundaries of his sport often incurring the wrath of the older more seasoned drivers. He survived his youthful exuberance only to later become a seasoned and highly respected driver himself. In February of 2001, he was killed doing what he loved, and I was devastated. See, the problem was I had never realized he was my hero until he died. In fact, when I initially saw the wreck and where he was in the points system, I can remember thinking to myself, “oh well, we’ve had to dig out of bigger holes than this.” Three hours later, the leaders of NASCAR held a press conference to say he had died, and I literally broke down in tears. I also remember thinking at the time, “Why do I feel this way?” I found the thought of mourning for someone I had never met, very strange. I say all of this to make a point. I had grown up worshipping and idolizing someone I did not personally know and really knew very little about. Our society places a premium on entertainment, sports, and political figures. Scripture consistently makes it clear that as disciples of Christ we are to serve others and be less self-centered. When we put those teachings into action, we set a biblical example for our family that shows we have read and applied the teachings in scripture. Whether it is serving in the church or helping with the local homeless shelter, we should be active in taking Christ to others by serving them. Doing this will show we are not merely readers of the Word but also doers of the Word. When a family observes their father and husband being more Christ centered by serving others, it is much more likely to have a positive impact on the family than simply instructing them to be servant
The ideal action we would take as God’s people would be to help those in need, but like the Good Samaritan parable in the Bible, many would not help those in need. It is not always easy to see Christ in the people around us because we are human and we are not perfect. Dorothy explains this statement when she says, “It would be foolish to pretend that it is easy always to remember this” (Room for Christ 2). We need to make room in our hearts for Christ, and also the people that presented to us as Christ.
I serve to Jesus every day by taking time out my day to help others. When my classmates or friends are struggling with something I try to assist them
Recognizing God is a part of our vocation within community can be confusing for us, how can we serve God in the different venues of our life when the world teaches such differing views? We are encouraged to share our witness, testimony, and service within our families, workplace, and our social settings. Family includes the household within our life touching upon each role parent, child, and spouse. It becomes acceptable to compartmentalize the areas of our life and serve in comfortable areas. Consumerism and societal pressures challenge us to withdraw from the Spirit when we feel intimidated, out of place, or even unworthy of God’s involvement in our life. We are called to be “the salt of the earth”, accepting the challenge to unite God’s calling upon our whole-life. According to Migliore, “United in Christ by the power of the Spirit we are one community; we are members of one body and mutually dependent on one another. Recognizing God works with all areas of community unites families, workplace, and social settings together.
Primary service is the key. Many view this as a contradiction because the leader is leading and serving. How can a person do both? Good servant leaders are good listeners. The communication between the leader and the follower being served allows the leader to listen to the follower first, in order to understand what the other person has to say and to understand their needs. These leaders practice empathy as well. Understanding what the follower is facing or feeling is comforting to the follower because it validates their importance to another person. The ability to heal a person through care and the concern for a person’s well being is another quality of a servant leader. These are only a few of the characteristics that generate a strong servant leader. Mother Teresa said, “The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.” Her words describe exactly what servant leaders do. Servant leaders serve others willingly because they find joy and pleasure in doing so. The outcome of serving others in this manner is growth and social impacts for a greater good. When there is an improvement in self-actualization, followers improve in their goal reaching or task completion by understanding their full potential to do
In addition to promoting communication between themselves and their kids are more prone to focus on promoting healthy communication between themselves and their children as well as encouraging communication between all of their family members. Families involved in churches have stre...
First, I have a daily centering prayer practice, where I sit for 15 to 20 minutes in the morning in silence with the intention of opening to the presence of God and his action within. I find that this practice gives me an opportunity to center my attention on becoming receptive to God and has created in me an appreciation for prayer in which I say nothing and rely on Grace to be the catalyst for my experience and transformation, not my doing or saying the right thing. I also like to follow the liturgical season and participate in the experience of the journey of Jesus. Even though giving up something like TV for lent may not be on par with the suffering and temptation of Jesus, it does give each of us an opportunity to short circuit our devices of comfort and distraction and feel the pull of temptation. So, for each season I try to interact with its appropriate aim. Lectio Divina, is another way that I am exploring the scriptures and allowing for God to communicate with me in a new way. Reading a verse or passage, then letting go of trying to interact with the reading, but instead allowing it to wash over me and reveal a word, phrase, or experience and then repeating it a few times really allows the Bible to communicate with me new truths each time I read. Finally, I try to be a good neighbor. I am afraid that I have a long way to go in regard to being a good friend or a good
After reading through this book, I feel that my thoughts on what Christian discipleship should be have been reinforced and somehow cleared up. Discipleship is central to Christian faith and practice because it is how the Christian message is shared with the world. Christian discipleship is not just about spreading the Word of God; it is also showing the world what being a Christian really is. Discipleship-focused faith should demonstrate how God’s Word is for everyone and knows no boundaries whether they are race, language, country, size, gender, etc. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world, therefore, His sacrifice it to be shared with the world through our actions, as always, actions speak louder than words.
Philippians 2 gives us guidance on how to imitate Christs love through, humility, stewardship and giving. The verse states;
I learned about the importance of giving back at the age of 11yr old and putting the very important needs of others in front of my own. Volunteering in a homeless shelter at a young age opened my eyes. Where I was placed to give food, clothes, money & hygiene products to people in need. Where would I be right now without the help of God, my mother, family& friends and the church community”. Giving a helping hand to the people in the community is Something we should always do. In the ("bible Acts 20:35 says in everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the lord Jesus himself said: it is more blessed to give than to receive"). Having a compassionate heart for the community blesses the congregation.
...tial ideas and theologies that are absolutely the cornerstone to having a healthy ministry. Ideas like community, grace, love, and forgiveness could all have their own paper written for them individually, but acceptance is absolutely essential to any ministry. To accept someone into your family, just like the father in the story of the prodigal son, is to share all of these values listed above. By accepting them we are showing them grace, love, forgiveness and belonging, that each and everyone one of them so desperately desires. If we as youth pastors can embrace acceptance and also use it genuinely and not as a technique for recruiting, then surely our ministry will grow both in numbers and in depth in the knowledge of the word of God. By doing exactly what God does for us, we can show His love, His grace and His mercy by simply accepting others into our family.
What is a hero? Why are they recognized in our society? A hero is someone who sacrifices and strives to help others, even if their lives are at risk. Heroes aren’t afraid, irresponsible, or frail. They don’t just lag around when problems are happening; they stand up for what is right and just for others. These role models inspire and protect others through the hardest times. Some major role models in our society today are Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Welles Crowther, and Nancy Gianni. These people don’t hesitate to stand up for the right cause though many trials rise before them. They aren’t afraid of the unknown path they are taking.
As a Christian the word of God will be in the forefront of every decision or task. Servant leadership emphasizes many biblical principles. As a leader each task should be undertaken
I truly believe heroes still exist in the 21st century but before you can ask yourself that you have to understand what exactly a hero is. A hero is a person who can "transform compassion into a heroic action.” (Text 2 What Really Is a Hero, Anyway) A hero can come in all shapes and sizes and be of any race or age. (Text 5 Modern Day Heroes) You do not have to have special superpowers or be the most athletic person to be considered a hero. In fact you can be a hero and still have disabilities. Nick Scott is a prime example as to how he became a hero regardless of his physical state.
The shepherd and sheep relationship is the best illustration for the relationship between pastor and parishioners. When Jesus asked Simon Peter does he love him three times and said to him “Feed my sheep”, the shepherd and flock relationship has been set. Since Jesus is our good shepherd (Jn. 10:11a), he laid out a good example for us to follow - to lay down his life for the sheep. (Jn. 10:11b) Thus, the wellness of both in and out of the parishioners should always be the concern in the pastors’ hearts. Soul care for the people is essential. Christian friendship is the foundation of Christian soul care. Pastoral ministry including preaching, teaching, and worship forms the broad context of pastoral counseling. Pastoral care is within pastoral ministry but broader than pastoral counseling. God’s love is the source and motivation. Within the pastoral care, there are spiritual direction and pastoral
...have presented to the world and for a large extent lived by it. Despite being subjected to persecutions, we as a people, maintained a level of humanity and caring that usually far exceeded the surrounding civilizations. It is the Christians job to go out in to the community and present the gospel. This being said, the moral responsibilities and values set fourth by Christians are a building block for the community and the world. Once these things are established it becomes a giant circle. The people have direct impact upon the community and that community is what bonds the people. Moral responsibility and community are in many ways one in the same, they work together to unite, and activate the citizens of faith so that they can positively impact the political process, influence public policy and define the heritage of Christian values, principals, and morals.
