Healthcare administration is a field that is often overlooked, but is essentially the beating heart of any healthcare organization. With more and more hospital, and clinics, and other healthcare organizations popping up everywhere there is a need for people like me to manage the day-to-day operations. I am choosing to apply to this program because I want to study how the U.S. healthcare system operates. I want to learn the essential skills of operating a healthcare facility such as managing a budget, reducing healthcare costs, analyzing the efficiency of an organization and proposing ways to improve it. This program is going to give me the necessary education and skills so I can carry out my goal of being a healthcare administrator. This program also aligns well with my interest in public health and basic business background. Attending the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Congress on Healthcare Leadership conference would be helpful for students such as myself who want to make connections with others in this field. Lastly, having the curriculum designed for students like me who have no experience in the U.S. healthcare system with the required internship makes this program a perfect fit for me. As someone who has many aspirations in life, I understand having both long and short-term goals is important. One of my long-term professional objectives includes being a community service manager at a health center. With this I am hoping to work with many other healthcare professionals to coordinate health programs and initiatives to improve the health of communities. If you have someone who may have been in banking for several years as an administrator and hiring them to be a healthcare administrator you may find out quickly that you have hired the wrong individual. Yes they may have great leadership skills and communication and relationship management skills but if they have never worked in a clinical or hospital, or any healthcare setting for that matter, how do you expect them to be able to relate to the complex problems that may occur with patient care, hiring the right employees to oversee patient care, and in many cases, hiring the right employees to oversee the hiring of the employees performing patient care. There are also many different computer programs that are necessary for an administrator to know in order to run a health care facility in an effective manner. Yes, many different occupations have programs that they must learn in order to be effective, but in the health care arena many times there isn’t time to teach one from scratch on how to use such a program. One example of not having enough time is when a major natural or manmade disaster takes place. Many times an administrator may have to jump in and work with field staff or hospital staff to save lives without doing patient care and if they do not know how a healthcare environment works, they could cost the lives of innocent
However, I do not want to do this at just any campus, but I want to accomplish this dream in a program whose staff puts the students’ needs before theirs. Anytime I have questions regarding documentation, I know that I can always depend on the University of Houston-Clear Lake staff to assist me with anything. Furthermore, when I conducted my research on different MHA programs, I desired to find a program near home and one that could provide me with countless possibilities. I am interested in pursuing the Physician Assistant (PA) degree because of my experiences both within the medical field and as a patient. These experiences have led me to believe that a team approach to patient-centered medicine provides the best and most comprehensive care possible. Further, the PA profession offers me the opportunity to continue my lifelong passion of helping others, giving back to my community, and provides me with further opportunities to teach.
Over the last nine years, I have been in the healthcare profession. When I was younger, I never imagined myself wanting a career when I would manage people, but who does? I always aspired to be a pilot, until reality kicked in. When I was fifteen, I had to volunteer a couple hundreds of hours for the school program in which I attended. I decided to volunteer at a local hospital. Little did I know that volunteering for three years would have led me into wanting a profession in healthcare. After volunteering for three years, I decided to get a job for a local community health center, where I have been employed for the last six years. I have held several different positions in those six years and I have learned a plethora of skills, many involving interpersonal communication.
Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.

With the knowledge acquired through the classes I will be a better manager to server to my colleagues in my upcoming career and it will help brighten my future. My passion of being a leader within a healthcare facility comes from knowing that if employees are treated well and happy with their job they will have excellent customer service skills and treat patients with excellence. When a patient is sick they are at the most vulnerable time of their life. If you receive awesome customer service during your most vulnerable time you will feel grateful. I have had many patients at my job express how we don’t make them feel like other doctors office. The patient has expressed that at other doctor office they just feel like another number. When a patient feels as if the staff, doctors, and manager care they will see the whole environment as effective leaders for all healthcare organizations.
At the moment I am currently a rising sophomore who seek to gain exposure in the medical field by participating in internships to obtain experience. Health Career Connection best aligns with my goal of becoming a pediatrician by working with preceptors and mentors who can expose me to different aspects of the medical field. My ideal internship experience has networking and professional development components to mold me into a well grounded professional. By participating in this summer internship I will enhance the skills I have already acquired and improve on my weaknesses as I seek to grow as a professional health care provider. Short term, I want to work in a medical facility, preferably a hospital or small clinic, in an administrative and/or clerical position. I would like to do this to gain experience on my resume since I have never worked in a medical field job before. After about five years, I will have my bachelor’s degree and want to be a department head in the hospital or managing a small medical office. My long term goal, after I go on to get my Master’s in Healthcare Administration, would be to open a small donation only clinic available to working parents who can’t afford healthcare insurance for their children. They are able to see a doctor for a short clinical visit for a suggested donation of something like twenty dollars. The staff would be made up of college interns who are in the pediatric or in another medical practicing major with a licensed medical doctor present overseeing the visit. This will help low income working parents to receive care for their child at an affordable rate. However, I know this would be difficult with Obamacare and its laws so hopefully by then, we will be rid of Obamacare. Another long term goal of mine is to manage a hospital or a public health facility. If I am unable to open my own business, I would like to oversee an entire hospital or manage public healthcare in the community I live. Either way, I would be impacting many lives and also be very beneficial to the community in several ways.

Especially now, with a bourgeoning elderly population. Health care administers, are relied on to present innovative ideas to impact and motivate their staffs, to produce unparalleled health services, with promising results. They are the driving force behind the health industry.
The healthcare field is ripe with opportunities, and the rapid growth extends beyond medical professionals. For an individual considering a career in the healthcare industry they have to set and accomplish goals which are important aspects of life-changing. Careers often successful begin through the education that suitable to support individual professional goals. An individual should establish an action plan that consists of professional goals which used to influence decisions in the chosen career, skills required, and skills to improve, the ultimate plan, an organization that offers valuable insight, and what strategies used to make these goals evident.
The portions best parallel to the objectives of the Triple Aim are Education and Integration. Along with strategies to increase translational and transformative medical/biomedical education, the hospital also plans to advance interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nursing, pharmacy, public health; advancing staff and faculty development, and increasing space for training, are key aspects of creating a workforce more versatile and apt to enhancing health care services (John Hopkins Medicine, 2013, p.9). Objectives also include funding an assessment and evaluation office to maintain and track student performance and create electronic portfolios for all students and graduates to monitor the progress and performance of enrollees.
