The purpose of this memo is to recommend that the course PA380 “Introduction to Public Administration” should remain mandatory as a degree requirement for the students in the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) major. This memo will also discuss the knowledge and skills that can be acquired from the PA380 and how these skills will apply to my future career as a child welfare social worker.
In recent years, a need to address organizational performance and accountability has risen in both the public and private sectors of child welfare social work. From the cost-effectiveness of programs to the restructuring of adoption and foster programs, it has become necessary for social workers to become more well-rounded, which includes having some knowledge of public administration (McBeath, 2009). PA380 teaches conceptual, technical, and human skills which prepare students to be in administrative positions, interact with businesses and government, and how to influence public organizations as a citizen (Denhardt, 2014, pg. 11-14).
Moreover, PA380 introduces social work students to many skills that correlate with current social work skills. The social work profession is founded on a unique set of core values which include service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW, 2016). PA380 reinforces these values by teaching students how to lead in a democratic way (Denhardt, 2014, pg. 4), how to participate in and contribute to the policy process, think critically, solve problems and make decisions, apply a public service perspective, and to communicate and interact productively with a diverse and changing workforce and citizenry (CSUSB, 2016).
I believe this class is ...

...ity to prepare students for the future demands of a social work career as it provides students with some knowledge of the effects of policy on all levels of an organization, accountability, efficiency and responsiveness, as well as how agencies acquire funding (Denhardt, 2014, pg. 79-120).
Based upon my findings, the information taught in PA380 greatly coincides with what is required by the NASW of social work students. The wealth of knowledge PA380 students acquire will be reinforced in social work practice and will essentially contribute to the greater ability of the student to advocate and better serve the client. As such, I am submitting my informal recommendations, for consideration by the Public Administration Advisory Board, to maintain the current requirement for PA380 “Public Administration” course as a degree requirement for the students in the BASW major.
