My Five Takeaway’s In my opinion, goal setting is one of the leading topics of the course. First, goal setting is not new to me, but now I have a greater understanding of how to set achievable and realistic goals. For instance, setting goals throughout this semester in my English, math, and psychology courses have helped to achieve satisfactory grades. Goal setting enabled me to maintain those grades by understanding how to phrase my goals positively, even if I found one of my courses not as interesting, I could stay focused and effectively manage my time. Lastly, setting measurable goals helped to check my progress and be sure I was staying on top of assignments, which allowed freedom from stressing about my courses, which allowed me to have fun in my spare time. To begin with, scheduling reading and assignments along with my personal obligations allows for organization and ultimately makes the process cohesive. The personalized schedule assignment was an eye opener. After creating the schedule, it was clear that adjustments were needed if it were to be followed. After adjusting the schedule, it was effortless to follow and was effective in helping to stay on task and not fall behind, and ultimately, lead to stable grades in all courses this semester. This is an exceptional tool to ensure one does not fall behind in their studies. Similarly, applying this strategy outside of academics has lasting benefits as well. When scheduling, be sure to include family time, chores, and any extracurricular activities; this approach has improved my time management skills tremendously. To summarize, a personal schedule is beneficial in academics, I encourage new students to create one and be sure to allot extra time and breaks, also, try to incorporate study time for each course every
During high school my teachers lectured my classmates and I on goal making. I specifically remember my health teacher using the SMART method; this says goals must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. Even though I had a great resource to make smart goals for myself, I never took the time to construct a game plan. Entering the vast new world of college, I want to improve myself by keeping several goals in mind each month, week, and day. My process starts by creating intellectual, psycho-emotional, physical, and social goals to work towards in my four years of college.
I’ve never been the type of person to buy into, or even read, many self-help books; however, I really appreciated reading this book. The few previous experiences I’ve had with them seemed very hard to apply to my life. What I think this book did differently was show that although you won’t see results right away, in whatever it is you do, if you do the little things right (or wrong) every day, you will see positive (or negative) results over time. I think one of the most powerful moments of the book was when he mentioned how many people today want to go from planting, directly to harvesting, instead of planting, cultivating, and then harvesting. Balancing my priorities by using an organized system has significantly helped me to manage my course work and assistantship goals and be able to include time for my training goals. The most impactful activity has been setting up a monthly, weekly, and daily calendar that covered the entire term with an outline of all major course assignments and assistantship projects with a clear timeline to complete all requirements. Unlike previous semesters, I felt more at ease during the final couple weeks of the semester compared to my peers. This semester, I will continue to commit Thursdays and Fridays to research assistantship work only. Structuring my time this way has really helped me to focus on specific assignments: I feel more effective when I can dedicate an entire day to one project, paper, or task. Time, the most valuable thing humans own, managing it, no easy task especially to a young undeveloped mind of a teenager, but efficiently managing time is a whole different task in itself. Students take part in extracurriculars and sports in which adding a responsibility to their schedule, but a successful student can handle the responsibilities of playing a sport. Additionally, a large part of being a highly effective student is knowing how to efficiently complete assignments, first by planning out a certain day or if the assignment is due the next day than planning out a time during the day where they complete the assignment. Another large part is completing projects and research papers, planning their schedule to complete such tedious and rigorous assignments over a certain amount of days and not just procrastinating. Working with others, an area that many do not consider a necessary skill, where working with others and collaborating is a huge part of adult life. Although creating putting together a schedule following through it is another story. I often find myself struggling with keeping my schedule and do something opposite instead. I decided to work with other students to help me focus and stick to my schedule and turn it into a routine. Scheduling the study time in the library or in a Starbucks also helps the process of getting my study done. Many students, especially at a high school level are motivated by outside factors, such as grades, and teacher persuasion. There is, however, a lack of goal setting exercises found in education as a whole. Schunk (2009) stated that it is important to teach students how to set goals in a classroom, so that they learn how to set goals in their own personal lives. Starting goal-setting practices earlier in life, and especially in the education setting, will promote goal-setting as a life-long skill.
In order for me to manage my time more effectively, I started to write down my assignments and goals in my agenda. Having a visual of when due dates were coming helped me to be more aware of when to start my homework. If I know that a drawing for my art class is due on a Thursday I would finish the assignment on Tuesday. Besides writing assignments, I have started to arrange when and how I will finish my assignments. I got this idea from an article “By Popular Demand: Time Management for High School and College Students” by Laura Stack. Putting as much time as I possibly can into my work will allow me to achieve the objective of the assignment. Managing my time efficiently will allow me to put as much time as I need into my academics as well as personal time. My first takeaway is during this time the differences between social classes were reduced due to literacy and political participation. People now had more opportunities for social advancement, education, and to have a overall “better life”. My second takeaway is “mass production created a mass society in which prosperity spread to different classes”. On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. I work in the day and attend school in the evening so it is critical for me to know how to manage my time effecteively. However my workload at work had became extremely unpredictable and with the weekly assignments for the FOUN1019 course it was very difficult for me to manage my time. I usually create a list of task I have to complete with the date it needs to be completed, then work on them individually to meet the due date. I realised this alone was not a very effective method for completing my assignment or managing time because I did not consider the preparation some of the task required. I then decided to approach my task differently to ensure that I was able to complete the weekly FOUN1019 assignment as well as other course work and the meet my deliverables at work. I kept making my list but I broke my task down into smaller task and allocate a time slot for finishing it eg.
