Introvert My first type indicator is Introvert. Introverts always sounded like meek people hiding in the shadows to avoid being noticed or the kids in school that hid behind the student in front of them to avoid being picked to answer a question. This is my interpretation of an introvert but as I grew older I realized that introversion was one of my preferences and it took me a while to get it through my head that this is not necessarily a bad thing. I have a very high standard of how I live my life, set for my children, and my Airmen. My time in the Air Force has solidified this preference. I have a phrase for my Airmen. “Be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there” and “do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it.” It is remarkable how difficult this simple phrase is to accomplish for people. I take this phrase very seriously as it is very important to me. When a person does not live up to this standard I make it a point to find out the when, where, why this occurred. I have approximately 250 personnel that work for me and making a hasty decision would cause many of my Airmen to unnecessarily alter their home life. I had to create a schedule that would allow 24 hour coverage, 365 days per year. With my section leads we created a schedule in a week that was very effective and is being utilized. I am not a very outspoken person but I care tremendously in what I do, whether it is being a parent, husband, or whatever it may be that I am tasked to do or I task myself to do. I have found that when I conscientiously focus on being outspoken that it feels forced and may come off to others as insincere. Introverted being shy or nervous with talking in front of the class where you tend to keep away from doing something in front of a class full of students or even working in groups. Introverts sometimes prefer to work alone and spend time by themselves rather than hanging out at parties, or social event that may make them uncomfortable or feel out of place. They also tend to have fewer friends because of socializing tends not to be a big part of the personality. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has recognized my profile as Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking and Judgment (INTJ). As an introvert, I can get nervous among other people. It does not pose a problem for an individual. On the other hand, in order to be an effective leader, it is important for me to keep a profound communicational relationship with my subordinates. Without proper communication skills, it is not possible to establish a functional relationship with my subordinates. This may jeopardize the success of any activity that we are involved in. My top five virtues that I strive to have are patience, compassion, honesty, self-discipline, and loyalty. I believe these traits make me a better leader and ultimately a better person. A good example occurred while deployed in Afghanistan and one of my NCOs was going through some very hard times with his wife back home. I completely understood that facing the possibility of divorce and separation from his children was weighing heavily on his mind. This was greatly affecting his focus on our mission in Afghanistan and I really needed him to be part of the team, but I realized he needed the care I myself could not provide. In many ways, I related with the experiences he was going through. I explained to him that talking with someone just to vent out frustrations worked for me and was a great start, however, he must seek counsel with a chaplain to help him cope with the emotional pain he was enduring. I also advised him in seeing a legal specialist for his options. His emotions were getting the best of him and his focus on his duties was faltering. After listening to the Soldier ranting on about his wife and her boyfriend repeatedly, I felt that I had enough, I had to refer him to see a behavior health specialist to help him deal with his newfound anger, and to provide necessary tools to become an effective Soldier and NCO. When studying human personality, psychologists may consider different levels of analysis. Personality can be viewed as characteristics typical of human nature and that we are “like all others” (Kluckhohn & Murray, 1953), as humans share the same basic biological components, experiences of development and social interactions. Alternatively, personality can be analysed in terms of individual and group differences, where we are “like some other[s]” (Kluckhohn & Murray, 1953). This approach considers that groups of individuals possess common characteristics, but that characteristics vary between individuals. For example, men are generally more aggressive than women, but one man may be more aggressive in comparison to another man. This level of analysis takes a nomothetic view on personality. Some theorists however may be more interested in individual uniqueness and take an idiographic approach to studying personality.

I learned that for me to be an effective leader I have to be able to change follower’s behaviors, and make them both satisfied and perform well. When I become a manager I have to realize that I will be working with a diverse group of people and what works for one person might not work for everyone. Loneliness is something that a lot of people fear. It can be a feeling that nobody is there, as if you are alone in the world with nothing but your thoughts. The silence and the boredom can get to people, but for me, I'm fueled by it. When I am alone I can focus, I can get things done and find true peace. The anxiety and stress of life slips away when I'm left with nothing to do and no one to talk to. When I am left to myself my body and mind is able to recharge from the tasks that have recently drained me. I am able to rest and calm down, knowing that there is no one around me.
