I get home from a long day of work in the normal fashion; dirty, tired, and hungry. I worked at a lead products and chemicals plant which was my first full-time job out of high school. On a typical week I would work anywhere from 60 to 80 hours; which, for a 18 year old right out of high school, can be somewhat tiresome. I became independent and self-reliant at a very young age, but my mother was always my number 1 cheerleader. Even though I was making more money than my 18-year-old self knew what to do with, I still lived at home with my patents because I had such a wonderful relationship with the both of them. The first night dad stayed at the hotel, by mom’s side and I attempted to go home to bed. As soon as I walked into my front door and saw the place where my mother fell, with baking flour from her unfinished dinner preparations propelled across the kitchen floor, I had a feeling of uneasiness come over me that still to this day I cannot put into words. I frantically ran up the stairs to my room, turning on every light that came into my path. A CAT scan performed of mom’s brain gave her doctors reason to be worried, so a biopsy was ordered. Remember earlier when I spoke about those little memory nuggets that I will never forget? I was about to have one. Dr. Nowitzki, momma’s lead physician, walked into mom’s hospital room. “Name and date of birth” he routinely asks, looking down at his folder full of disorderly patient notes. “Nine, five, fifty-four” my mom replies, for the 47th time today. “Anne, the CAT scan that was performed of your brain was inconclusive. However, we were able to identify a small, clouded area located at the left frontal lobe region of your brain. After careful discussion with my peers, we all feel that it would be in your best interest to perform a biopsy, so that we can collect a small sample to send into our Lab in California for further review.” Just like my grandfather, my mother never complained; so reluctantly she said “whatever you feel is necessary, doctor.” “Great!” he replied “I will order one for as early as 8am tomorrow morning.
