The Importance Of Playing Baseball

If I had to choose one word to discribe me, it would be Ambitious. Ever since I was a small child I have always strived to be the best at whatever I would do. Whether I was playing baseball, racing motorcycles, diving, or even simple games in class I would always try to be number one. My dad installed the mindset of if you’re not first you’re last in my head at a very young age.
I started playing baseball at the age of 4. There was always something about the game I loved. The first time I stepped on the diamond I was instantly hooked. the teams I played on as a child were always full of kids who has the most amazing natural talent, talent I didn’t possess. I rode the bench for most of my little league years, hardly ever getting into the game,

The first day of sophomore year I signed up for baseball. There was no junior varsity team offered so I had to try out for Varsity. I remember how nervous I was the first day of practice walking down to the field. Every other player already had a year on me and had been working together for that span of time. The first thing I did was go introduce myself to the coach. My entire baseball career I had played second string first and second base but the coach decided to put me in right field, I hated it but I did my best. At the end of every practice I would stay later than everyone else and work on drills by myself, always trying to better myself. After weeks of practice I finally decided to try to take over the position as first base, currently occupied by an all league senior player. I practiced the hardest I had ever practiced in my entire life, but came up short. I had been so ambitious and tried so hard to take over the position but I couldn’t do it. That summer all I did was practice. I worked on my game every day until that first day of school. The coach pulled me aside the first day and told me that he had seen how hard I worked all summer and he decided to put me at first base, and I was selected as a team captain. After talking to my counselor at my highschool we figured out that I had zero chance of attending a CSU or University, and if I were to graduate I would have to attend a Junior College. That meeting with my counselor and my mom really helped me flip the page on this chapter of my life. I realized that if I was going to be anything in this world, make money or support a family I was going to have to put myself into gear.
