The first thing I learned about myself is that I can’t help but procrastinate. Towards the beginning of the year I struggled with procrastination, but not too much. It was so early in the year that I still had the ‘go get em’ mindset. As the year has progressed, and the holidays approach, the drive and motivation I once had before, has disintegrated. I found myself scrambling at the last minute to finish, or even start my assignments. I would sit down, and draw a blank, instead thinking about all the other things I could be doing (watching tv, sleeping, eating, being with friends, dancing, ect). As a response to this acquired spaciness, I tried a few things to help myself.
I tried a few techniques to stop my procrastination, and maybe give myself the drive back. A few things I tried include treating myself after an assignment was done, remembering the stress-free moment when you finish an essay, and the ten minute technique. ...those giving feedback aren’t insulting me, or the paper; they are just suggesting ways to improve, or enhance my ideas. Giving and receiving feedback is a hard, yet important skill to learn, and hope to continue improving in this area.
I have discovered a lot about myself as a writer throughout the course of this class. Before this class, I believed I was a good writer, but didn’t have much evidence to support that. Now, I am able to say that I am a good writer due to what I have learned, but I also understand that I still have so much more to learn. I now know my strengths, such as gathering information, and my weaknesses, like procrastination. This acquired knowledge about myself will not only help me improve on my weaknesses, but also build off of my strengths. Looking back on this class now, I see how much I’ve learned, and how much room I have to keep growing.
