Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
One of our first assignments that our class did was write a response to a piece of work we read, and use that for inspiration in on our own poems. I wrote a poem about a necklace that held meaning to me, and the end result surprised me. At first I thought I would fail the assignment because I didn’t
This once again showed in my first essay while I was telling of my parents wedding. In another passage, I’m telling of what was going on from my perspective. I write, “My uncle and I got into quite a bit of trouble for running around and not being there for pictures when we needed to be. I was out of breath from running away from my duties as the flower girl. I would run into different scenes where the photographer was taking pictures.” I believe I had really good use here in putting the reader in the scene, and describing what was going on.
When writing about my shaping influence for my third essay, my research paper, I first had to set the scene for the readers and give them a reason to read. In order to do that, I had to describe why this topic affected me.
These capabilities that I have are ones I was able to develop on over the course of this semester. Now that I can recognize my skills, I can focus on how to improve these skills even more. Even though I’m good at poetry, description, and narration I can still build and improve these
The reason I use such personal examples is because I think that it will help the readers of my essay understand that originality is something that I have experienced as being difficult to achieve. I feel that if I make personal connections in my writing other people will be more apt to connect to my writing, and interpret their own meaning. At the start of my English course I tried to not make personal connections in my writing; I thought it was unacceptable to do so at the college level since it was unacceptable in my high school English classes. After only two classes I realized that the English 101 class I was in was asking me to explore my own thoughts and interpretations of texts so that I would be prepared to write this very critical
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
The days are getting warmer, the grass is greener, and everything is growing. As the spring semester has progressed, our class has focused on developing our writing skills. Like the buds on the trees, my skills are emerging. Instead of sunlight and water, my freshly developed skills will need practice and review. Based on this perspective, the word that best describes my experience in my Advanced Composition class is “developing.” My composition skills have been thoughtfully developed as we have progressed through differing challenges in our assigned papers.
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.

I signed up for English 131 because I enjoy writing and figured it would be a fun and informative course in which I could learn writing strategies to help me in my college career and beyond. I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty good writer, as I took AP English classes in high school and it has always been a subject I’ve naturally gravitated towards. This course exceeded my expectations as to what I could learn in ten weeks. I feel that my writings skills have developed in all aspects, and I can take the skills I have learned and applied them to other courses and my future career. It’s an extremely good feeling after finishing an assignment, reading it over, and feeling very proud of how I was able to develop my thoughts and resources into something that has the potential to make a lasting impact on its readers.
Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me.
All in all, I am discovering my strengths and weaknesses, I am learning, and most importantly, I am growing. By discovering my strengths and weaknesses, I am identifying where I need to improve in my writing in order to become a successful author. Over time, I have learned all the components to composing a five-star essay, but truthfully, I have learned who I am. My first semester at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has been everything that I expected it to be. I knew it would be strenuous to move to a new city totally different from what I had grown up in. I also know that this would put a strain on making new friends, keeping up with my social life, maintaining a healthy mental and physical and healthy lifestyle, and achieving my goals - nonetheless, I have managed to do all of these things and have a splendid time doing so.
We have reached the midpoint of the semester. Two long months of continuous reading, writing, and annotating; article after article, paper after paper. As much as I dread reading and writing, I am glad to say that I have improved substantially since my first days in your English 5A class. Although there are still some aspects of my writing I have yet to improve on, I have made significant strides on improving my grammar, sentence structure, and the transitions from paragraph to paragraph. Evidence of my improvements are visible on my first two major writing projects this semester; “College Writing For The Incoming Freshman” and “Segregation Is Over, Right?”. Aside from writing, I have also improved on my analytical skills and rhetorical skills.
As the quarter progressed, these ten weeks have been an enormous journey for me. I learned a lot of new skills and methods as a writer in your class. The methods and skills I learned in this class were very beneficial to me to improve, not only my writing, but also my critical thinking, rhetorical, and creative skills. The three major assignments we have done in our class represents the techniques that I learned. In all major assignments, I have used all the skills that I have learned in this class and revised many of the features that I lacked in ability. Each major essay represents my progression and polished work since I tried to put a lot of effort into to revision and make those an amazing piece for the final drafts for my portfolio.
I believe my skills as a writer have significantly developed over this semester. I have been able to identify my weaknesses so that I can improve on them. In high school, I always wrote a basic paper consisting of the introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. My introduction was extremely vague and basic, my thesis was incredibly weak, and my conclusion was just the introduction reworded. I started my conclusion with “in conclusion” and this semester I have been able to grow away from this habit. I can write even longer essays without much difficulty.
Looking through my past submissions and pieces of work throughout this past semester, I have made many realizations in regards to my progress as an English student. Through re-reading my writing, and reviewing the feedback I have received on my writing, I can recognize my growth as an English student. In addition to realizing my growth, I am also able to see a lot of areas that still need work. This past semester I have faced many challenges, I have pushed myself to go outside of my comfort zone, and I have excelled in several areas. After analyzing my past works from this semester, I have identified many re-occurring strengths and weaknesses from each unit, as well as challenges and goal assessments for myself in the future.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
In high school I didn’t consider myself that great of a writer, but I always seemed get decent grades on what I wrote. I mean I might just not be giving myself enough credit on my writing. I’m not really sure; I guess I don’t really think that I do anything that greatly. A lot of people did want my help writing their papers in high school, so I guess I couldn’t have been but such a horrible writer. In high school, the most important things to me weren’t the people, the experiences, the parties or any of that; I prided myself on my work. Now that isn’t all bad because it got me the grades to get into my dream school, but I think that I lost of what could have been a great four years of my life. I’m glad that I’ve had that experience though because now I realize you need balance. You can have fun and do you school work too, you just have to stay organized and on top of things. I’m really hoping that this will be a great five years for me, and that my writing will improve over the course of this semester.
