I’ve never had a close relationship with any of my five older siblings. As we’ve gotten older we’ve drifted apart so much that I don’t really remember what my sister even looks like. Most likely this was caused by the fact that none of us have the same mother, although we share the same father, making it harder for us to see each other. I know some of my friends have had similar experience with sisters going to college, brothers off to the armed forces and family members moving across the country or even across the world. This is different from my experience with siblings because it is almost like their mothers are purposely trying to keep my brothers and sisters away from us. According to Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, an effect is something that is produced by and agent or cause (Merriam-Webster, 1961). For this proposed research an effect will be any physical or mental differences, which is directly or indirectly caused through growing up with a disabled older sibling, between teenagers who fit this criterion and teenagers who do not. Teenagers, for this proposed research, will be defined as anyone from the age of 13 to the age of 18. Grew up with, will mean the disabled older sibling was living in the same home as the studied individual at their time of birth, continued to live in the same home with the studied individual for at least twelve years, and had frequent interactions with the studied individual throughout the twelve years. For this proposed research, disabled siblings will include anyone has the inability to be independent due to a birth defect, and will never be able to gain the skills necessary to become independent in the future.
I grew up in a two income, working class household with one sibling. Neither of my parents had a secondary education and both worked an average of 45 to 50 hours a week to support the family. During the entire 4 years of high school I cannot recall my mother asking me about one homework assignment, attending one band concert or football game. There are so many ways to write literature. One of the most difficult styles is poetry, which is why many writers have trouble writing it, and/or getting any popularity from it. But from time to time there comes a poet who is exceptionally good at writing poetry. Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, or in this case Gwendolyn Brooks. But like most poets, Brooks was not born a famous poet. Brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas. Both her parents were very supportive of their daughter 's passion for writing, and because of that, Brooks was able to get a poem published when she was just 13. In the two presented books, the main theme outlined in both texts is the theme of relationship between the child and parent. Chinua Achebe in his book, Marriage is a Private Affair developed this theme in the marriage perception outlining the conflict which occurred between a father and his son (Achebe 22). On the other hand, Alice Walker in her book, Everyday Use, developed a story of family who consist of a mother and her two daughters. One of her daughters proved to be rebellious and went against the family norms (Walker 47). This paper will outline some of the similarities and differences in the parent child relationship in these two books. I have three siblings along with three nephews. I have a younger sister, older sister, and one older brother. My older sister is the one that had my nephews. We all lived under the same roof until I moved out for college. Are we even related? Are we really sisters? You would think coming from the same parents and living together that we'd be clones of each other. But that's not the case here. This topic has been researched by psychologist and sociologist for decades; which has provided both positive and negative outcomes of growing up with siblings. Children can benefit from growing up with siblings because they can learn from their siblings, gain social skills, and their siblings may become a valuable asset in one’s life.
My brothers and sister are the best motivation to me. It is not every day that we get along but when we do then it is a good day. Every day they make me want do better, not only for myself but for my mom and them also. They encourage me to do better now so that my future is bright later on. Family is always the best to have on your team especially for their support because they genuinely mean it and you know that it is coming from their heart.
