My Best Experience With English Experience

English is my primary language and I would like to think that I have mastered the English language. However, who ever ends up reading this journal entry might think differently. Do to my experiences with learning the English language, I do show empathy to ELL’s students. Not only are they learning a new language, but they must also use this new language to comprehend and learn academic areas such as science, math, and social studies. I can hardly begin to imagine what it is like to come to a new country and school and to have to learn a new language. As I am fairly new to academia as an educator, my experience with second language learners in the classroom is limited. I would be lying if I said I did not struggle with instructing and communicating Iraqi children approached us all the time asking for water or candy. It was very interesting communicating with them in English, which of course, is not their native language. For the most part, their only experience with English speaker was with American service members. A lot of the English words they used were military jargon because that is what they learned and mimic. If I was to use a simple English language phrase such as, could you please move out of my way, they might not understand me with out some type of hand gesture. However, if I said, watch you six, they would know to look behind them. Due to this, I feel that I have had wide range of experience with Second Language I want to be able to build off those experiences and reinforce those lessons with tools and content that I learned from this course. From there, I hope to combine those past experience and knowledge from this course and communicate with my English Language Learner’s more proficiently and narrow the communication gap.
