The third and fourth weeks seem to have gone by so quickly. I think that I am beginning to connect with my students, and I am not as overwhelmed by all of the diversity in the classroom. In the third week we got to experience a tornado drill. I was incredibly surprised by how quite and well behaved my class was, since normally it is impossible to even get them down the hallway to gym. This week, students learned how to write the number seven and the number eight when we were in the class. They were able to practice their handwriting on tiny chalkboards. I thought the way my teacher taught it was interesting. First, she had all of the students draw the number in the air with their finger. Next, the students got to trace over the number she had drawn on their chalkboard with a wet sponge. Then the students traced the number with their finger, being sure to stay on the lines they had just created with their sponge. Finally, the students were then allowed to pick up their chalk and create the number themselves. The teacher had them all show her their number and when she gave them a thumb up they could turn their chalkboard in and begin working in their writing handbook. I thought that this was a neat way to get them to practice writing their numbers correctly, and a way to avoid the students breaking or making a mess with the chalk. This week, I was able to talk with my cooperating teacher and discovered what would be a good lesson for my classmates and I to teach. We have decided on weather. We were going to try to incorporate trees because that is what they are learning about now in science, but now looking at the standards seasons and trees are not really in Kindergarten science standards. Even though she expresses her expectations through examples and visuals, the objectives are almost always just orally explained to the students. When my cooperating teacher is beginning to teach she will normally state the objective very informally to the students. An example of how she does this is by saying “today we are going to learn how to correctly write the numbers seven and eight.” The students at least get an understanding for what they are going to be learning for the day. However, I think it would help if she displayed it visually somehow for the students who are English Language Learners. My teacher has many effective ways to communicate with her students, even with all of the barriers she has to overcome to reach every student.
