Upon my arrival in this class at the beginning of the semester, I had 2 different sets of expectation. I thought this class would show me all my possibilities and open my eyes to which major I should declare. I did not know how exactly this would happen, but I do not teach at a university. My second thought was that I would not learn anything; that this class would cover basic academic success solutions and strategies that had been preached through out all my years in high school. Either way I expected this class to slide by, and do well with little to no effort. I made a lot of assumptions about this class, before even looking at the syllabus, or attending a class. One of them was how easy this class would be; I figured it would be an easy A. In this I was wrong, this class was not at all as easy as I had expected. I had to work significantly harder than I planned. There were many more projects, and assignments that I had not accounted for. Even though I had expected the class to be easier, I was able to quickly adjust. I enjoyed this class, even though it require significantly more effort than I had expected. The classroom was a very comfortable environment. I felt respected, and that I could be open about my thoughts with the people in class. Most of the people were really nice, and I enjoyed meeting them. They reciprocated the same respect and openness as I did, and I really appreciated that. I also found that many people in this class are really interesting and cool people. I am hoping that before summer term is over I have built a foundation of friendship with most all of them, and see that they are part of my circle of friends after I leave this class. As much as I liked this class, I felt some of the assignments were n... ... middle of paper ... ...ant impact on my success now and in the future. I believe this class is something everybody should get to experience, at least once. I would most definitely recommend this class to another student. If I were to give advice to incoming college students, I would definitely tell them to make friends with some upper classmen who can help them with learning about college things, like how to get around, tricks and tips about living college life right, how to find good scholarships and maybe get their notes, or textbooks for cheap or free. I would also recommend that they take syllabi seriously because as useless as they were in high school. College students rely heavily on them, because the professors make them so the students do not need to ask as many questions. On top of those 2 pieces of advice it will be crucial for them to learn how to manage their time efficiently.
With the first day of any core class there is a slight apprehension to what can be held within the semester ahead. The moment I stepped out of the classroom after the first day, I came to the realization this class was going to change me as a person. Through many readings, discussions, movies and personal opinion papers my values, knowledge, and future actions have both changed and strengthened. Three questions have been answered throughout the semester, Who am I? What do I know? and Based on what I know how should I act? Human behavior has enlightened me with issues that I can personally relate to and the effect has easily been the most beneficial compared to any other core class I have taken.
As a college freshman, I was worried about so many things coming into college. The biggest and most important thing was how to actually succeed in college. This course has helped me tremendously with succeeding in college. Throughout this semester, we have gone through multiple topics to help us succeed in college. The topics range from effective note taking, caring for yourself, how to succeed in college, understanding who you are, and also to planning your priorities. From taking this class, I have learned many strategies that helped me understand who I am as a person, how to take effective notes, and how to plan my time.
When looking at not just this class but all of my classes and looking at how I have been approaching them versus how I should approach them it definitely puts my mind in a different perspective because I am a person that “strives for excellence” and if I am able to “ace” a class then I definitely try and do that but a lot of the time that doesn’t mean sitting there and actually learning the information it means
As a soon to be graduating high schooler, I can say this class definitely gave me a dose of (that grown up word) independence. By focusing on the learning goals, I was able to see what changes I can make to create polished work. When I signed-up for this class, I assumed it would be easy and I was only taking it because I needed it to graduate; however, I can say that this class will help me in the future. There was no set requirement throughout the class, it was based on self-improvement. By making my own standards and being forced to make decisions, I definitely matured as a student. With this in mind, thank you for this valuable quarter and I can’t wait to advance in the future thanks to the learning goals and this overall
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
As the class ended, I feel that we all accomplished being able to think outside of the box. We learned the value and importance of being more socially mindful. By being able to more mindful of the other people around us and the lives they have lived, we are able to understand where other people may becoming from or why they have the opinions that they have. Overall, the class has truly been an eye opening experience and has instilled new values within myself about how to handle people that will cross my
As we always believe that everything is easy and nothing is impossible for us, until, we realize that we are doomed. In fact, this is a big problem among students, since, many end up failing their courses for this cause. Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking at the time I chose this and my other mini-term class, all I can say is that this was a very hard six-week journey for me. Although, the professors made it very clear on what to expect, I like many others, accepted the challenge without thinking about the consequences this could bring. Don’t panic, it was not as bad as it seems either, because I had the chance to learn a lot of new things that will definitely help me forge my future. I don’t regret taking this class at all, despite all the setbacks, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful professor who patiently made our journey more bearable, and my classmates that somehow always contribute to my
To conclude I’d like to say that something I’ll remember from this class years from now would be the great class experience. Everyone was very accepting and non-judgmental during the course of our class. Even when having to present in front of the class (one of my least favorite things to do) I didn’t feel that nervous, which is rare. I’ll forever be changed by the knowledge I’ve gain from this class because before I would have never imagined so many therapeutic accomplishments could become of group work. I plan to use this course quite a bit in my future career and hopefully help many people by the means of group work.
When I first started the semester, I had absolute no Idea of what major I wanted to do. Now after taking this course I have been able to narrow it down to 2 majors that I am interested in taking. I had no idea that there was even a sports administration major. If the class never brought in the sports administration presenter I would have never known about the major. In this course I have learned more about my transferable skills, personality type, academic interests, personal values, skills and strengths.
I thought that this class would be interesting and exciting, but unfortunately, it was one of those classes that I just couldn't seem to care about or just want to put effort in. It definitely exceeded my expectations, but not the way I wanted it too. For that, it was pretty much a nightmare taking this
But in this assignment I had a few things that I have never been subjected to or had to do before. That is what is great about taking these classes and having the ability to broaden your knowledge and know how.
At the beginning of the semester my outlook on this course was not so good. I was not looking forward to giving speeches or learning things that seemed like common sense, but as time went on I could tell that I was actually taking things away from it. I have learned that I am not so good at coming up with things to say under pressure and I get extremely nervous when I have to talk in front of people that I don’t know well. Oh wait, I already knew those things. This class has motivated me to strengthen my social skills and has also taught me how to effectively work in a team environment through the team communication consultant project. I will show this by analyzing my teams strategic plan, the cohesiveness of the team, and the productivity of the team.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.
In terms of Personal Development I feel that the course has helped me to develop the skills I need to improve my grades, and to build my confidence.
