I’ll be the first to admit, my enthusiasm when I enrolled in ENG 1020 hovered somewhere between going to the dentist and watching silent films. As a fourth year transfer student, I was not aware that I had to take a basic composition course in order to obtain my degree and I was rather annoyed when I found out I had no choice in the matter. The prospect of constantly writing papers and essays held no appeal for me. I have always enjoyed reading but I’ll admit I’m a little lazy and don’t like to actually write much. In addition to this, I never enjoyed high school English courses because the novels and plays we were forced to read were awful and I felt that I didn’t get a chance to express myself the way I wanted to and instead wrote what the teacher wanted to see in order to get a good grade. Despite my initial misgivings, ENG 1020 has changed my perspective on English courses. Prior to the course, I felt I was proficient in all of the learning outcomes described in the syllabus but through hard work and dedication to improving myself, I feel I have improved my skills the most in writing, researching and reflecting.
Reading is the one learning outcome I feel I have not improved in. The reason for this is that I believe that I am already a good enough reader to not need improvement. This is not arrogance on my part, but rather confidence in my abilities. I have already mentioned that I enjoy reading and it is something I spend a lot of time doing when I have a break from my coursework. In addition to this, I am a senior biological sciences major and I have had lots of practice in analyzing papers and obtaining relevant information from them. Over four years of university, I’ve had plenty of practice in refining these skills and E...

...ork. I learned to reflect and look for anything that could be improved and work on improving it.
Despite my initial misgivings regarding this course, it helped me to improve my skills in writing, researching and reflecting. The skills I learned led to me increasing my grades significantly and learn new things that would benefit me in other courses in the future. I would not say I’m glad I was obligated to take this course, but I am grateful for the things it taught me and the ways it helped me improve my writing and my mindset. I am now a better researcher and my papers are now more clear, concise and understandable and I am confident I now have the ability to implement these skills in any other setting and not just this particular course. I am also now more open to criticism and recognizing where my work needs improving and making the changes that need to be made.
English 1020 has enhanced my reading, writing, researching and reflecting skills by giving me the opportunity to practice writing, reading, and reflect on diverse topics. My perception of writing was also positively impacted by taking this course. I now view myself as skillful writer rather than just a college student taking writing courses to pursue my degree. I have become a skillful writer because I now take in consideration prior knowledge and new information I have gained from English 1020. I put into practice these skills whenever I write content relating to the four learning outcomes. Reading, writing, researching and reflecting are the four learning outcomes I utilized during the
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
Over the course of this semester, I have progressed as a writer. Picking up new skills and dropping old bad habits has transformed me into a much better writer than when I entered the English 101. Entering this class, the only English classes that I took were mandatory high school classes all four years. In these classes, however, content was focused on reading novels, poems, and literature. There was usually only one major writing assignment each year, which was a research paper on a topic that was given by our teachers. Although there was some writing involved in these classes, most of the class time was spent on improving my reading and comprehension skills. A small part of the class was given to improve my skills as a writer and even a researcher. In English 101, however, most of the class time was spent on writing and more specifically, academic writing. This includes doing proper research, picking a worthy topic to write about, correctly analyzing sources, and developing a well-rounded, complete paper. I have progressed a writer over the semester by effectively integrating and analyzing sources better, and being more specific with my words.
During my first semester of college, I felt like this course overshadowed all the others. I faced many challenges, gained better habits, and even increased the value of myself as a scholar. Not only did my professor provide her students with the course material she built a confidence inside of us that will allow us to be able to tackle any task, especially pertaining to any written compositions. The things that I have learned from this course could and will be applied to any and everything I do from here on out, whether that writing an essay or even taking a test. Again, the journey was long, but I will be forever grateful for the things that I, and all of my peers have gained from this
In conclusion, this class has truly been an invaluable learning experience for me. From finally figuring out how to correctly use the MLA format to effectively eliminating my procrastinating habits, the class has given me multiple opportunities to grow as a writer. I have developed an organizational pattern of success for me to write successfully in the future and have gained the confidence I desired to aggressively handle future written assignments. This class has allowed me to improve in areas I was already competent in and has made me address the areas where I was weak. Learning how to use the research tools available is an amazing skill that will be highly marketable no matter which career I decide to pursue. The foundation I have built by attending this class will enable me to be an expert in communicating with others in writing.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
English 102 have opened a new point of view in my mind. I discovered how to do research in a different language and realized that my brain was covered with dust, this is the first time after 5 years that I’m a former student and trying to get a second degree. Before I registered this class, I looked up a website called “Grade your Teacher” and the comments about the instructor were positive, so I decided to take it. At the beginning of this class (back to September 23rd) and after receiving a 0.0 as a grade for my first essay, I knew this was going to be hard, and I had no idea about how I was going to pass this research course.
This course was very challenging and time-consuming, but it was worth it. Throughout the course, I learned many things and I gained confidence in my writing. I know that I still have more things to learn and overall perfect, but I am a willing and dedicated student.
Throughout English 101 I have matured as a writer and acquired skills that will prepare me for the next level of writing. I feel immersed in the information I have been taught and understand what it takes to be a good writer. I have revised my papers with the proper use of grammar and composed thought provoking essays. This class has helped me significantly by improving my writing into proper english papers. Without these learning skills it would be impractical for me to convey opinions and thoughts grammatically. In the beginning of the semester my writing was undeveloped which resulted in incomplete papers. I have learned how to successfully methodize and formulate my thoughts for each essay into an understandable format. This semester has
Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
When I started on this course I didn’t know what to expect. After reading the syllabus and looking at what was required from the course – I became very nervous and questioned how well I would do. I never saw myself as a strong writer so my lack of confidence just added to my apprehension. I knew I needed to work on my writing skills but I didn’t know what to expect or what I would get out of the course. I now know that my concerns were unfounded – when you have the clear understanding of your topic, which approach you are going to take and what points you are trying to make to your audience then writing seems less difficult.
In high school, English was my strongest and favorite subject. I never had to work as hard in English as I did in math or any other subjects I took in high school. My peers would cram all night for a Literature test we were going to have but not I. I excelled in writing essays about Moby Dick and his white Whale or Beowulf and Grendel. My confidence in my ability to write was always high and when I enrolled at Chattahoochee, I assumed my confidence would not waiver. When I received my grade for my first paper, I was in shock of all the red ink that covered it. English 1101 taught me the skills I needed to have to be able to write a great paper and prepared me for what was to come for English 1102. English 1102 have taught me to rethink my abilities as a writer and to work harder and spend more time on my essays and think outside the box.
