When I started this class I felt that I already had good critical thinking skills, however that was not the case. I was already practicing some of the skills on a daily basis, but not at a conscious or critical level. So what has been my journey at developing as a critical thinker? The "Game Plan" I made for myself at the beginning of class has helped me by having a visual focus to always look back to for guidance to reach my goals. I feel that I have gained more of an understanding of how the three strategies have benefited me in other ways than I had hoped. First, I wanted to redefine the way I see things. Intellectual courage has helped me to step out of my comfort zone, and to question my beliefs. I was raised in a very small town where everyone was basically the same. Anyone who questioned the way things were or how they should be were pretty much cast out. I was raised to cling to my culture and religion and I have to stay very closed minded. This one was big for me because I have a very busy life. Between work, school, and a small child I always have more than a few things going on. Soon after starting college full-time I realized just how valuable my time really was. I no longer have time to just scroll through posts of Facebook or save pins on Pinterest. Although I enjoy these things and could still do them, I realize that I could be preparing for a quiz or even next weeks assignments. I have learned that assuming I will have time later can be a big mistake, and that letting my emotions get the best of me when I don 't do so well can be prevented. By better utilizing my time I have become a better student, and have more designated take care of the things in each part of my busy life. This has made my husband, daughter, and grades happier. When trying to define critical thinking you might run into some challenges along the way. Critical thinking is a widely used yet vague term that is practiced by different people in a variety of locations throughout the world. Critical thinking is a strong virtue for the majority and the worst enemy for others. Needless to say without critical thinking we would be nowhere close to where we are today pertaining to our technological and social endeavors.
In order to improve my critical thinking skill, I have kept analyzing at least one question I search from the internet every day since February 2016. I analyze the question in serval steps: to state the problem as clearly and precisely, to figure out the logic of the problem by identifying its elements, to carefully analyze and interpret the information I collect, to figure out and evaluate different options/actions, to choose the best option. This method helps me a lot in coursework. Now, I am reading the book “Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication” which is written by Melissa Goodwin and Catherine Sommervold. This book discusses different ways and strategies of 3Cs. It provides me different strategies in critical thinking and how to apply strategies to the real world. As I am reading this book, I apply some strategies when I solve questions, I feel it gets better and easier for me, but I still have a lot to learn and improve. One strategy I learn is to use mind mapping to help clarify and organize my thoughts/ideas. According to my research, some articles suggest me to read various types of book to become more knowledgeable which will be helpful in both critical thinking and problem solving. Now, I am still looking for books to read after I finish reading “Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Communication.” Additionally, I am going to talk to an instructor in the coming fall term to ask for guidance and suggestion in order to improve critical thinking
The author Vincent Ruggiero defines critical thinking in his book Beyond Feelings: A Guide to Critical Thinking, as a “search for answers, a quest.” It is the idea that one does not accept claims, ideas, and arguments blindly, but questions and researches these things before making a decision on them. From what I learned in class, critical thinking is the concept of accepting that there are other people and cultures in this world that may have different opinions. It is being able to react rationally to these different opinions.
The classic forms of social criticism were developed and applied in practice, even in ancient philosophy by Xenophanes, Socrates, Plato and the Cynics. The interest in critical thinking has never waned in the social and political thought, but social criticism reached true prosperity in the Enlightenment. Voltaire and Rousseau, Montesquieu and Locke, Hume, and Kant saw the most important means of formation of free and responsible citizens, harmonious and creative personality in a critical attitude towards the institutions and values. A new wave of criticism of social philosophy, implemented in classical forms, is associated with the names of the supporters of the revolutionary transformation of society. First of all, there may be mentioned the names of Marx, Bakunin, and Proudhon (Lavery, Hughes, & Doran, 2009).
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
Critical thinking is when an individual identifies and evaluates outside sources before making a decision. This is a very important still to learn to become an effective thinker and making educated choices. Critical thinking is fundamental when making choices, from selecting the right answer on multiple choice exams to choosing the right place and time to buy a house. An individual that has learned critical thinking is less expected to make poor choices that could potentially harm him or affect others. In theory this individual could calculate the consequences of his actions. A good critical thinker doesn’t need to memorize huge amounts of information. Every day in our life we take many decisions, some are trivial and inconsequential, but there are certain decisions which carry substantial consequences. These decisions of substantial consequences are difficult to accomplish and to make the right and appropriate decisions, a person should think critically. Critical thinking is a skill of evaluating arguments or propositions with an open mind and making a judgment after proper analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of the situation, and further taking any action. Decisions can be very simple like what you are going to wear today, or very complex like deciding how you want to build your career. At the start of this semester I wasn’t sure what to expect. The last attempt I made to take Psychology 101 was eighteen years ago, just out of high school, fresh into junior college. That class was overwhelming, not to mention boring, and I was not able to wrap my head around the information. I did end up withdrawing from the class. So, at the start of this semester I was nervous that this experience might be similar. I can honestly say it was not! My instructor made the material interesting, fun, and left me excited to return to class the next week. There were many topics that were covered throughout this semester. And a few of the chapters, Learning, Life Span Development, and Motivation and Emotion really resonated with me. Concepts I learned within in these chapters really got me thinking and some I am even trying to apply to my life now.
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.
While the semester is over and the deadline has expired, I thought I would write this to express my true intended thoughts.
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
What is not easily recognized is the fact that the very fabric of life is dependent on the ability to think properly and make good decisions. Improper thinking is costly in the quality of life and monetarily. The result of a critical thinker that has worked to cultivate proper thinking skills includes: the ability to ask vital questions and to identify problems with clarity. A critical thinker also collects relevant information while effectively interpreting it, thinks with an open mind, uses alternative systems of thought, and understands how to communicate while working to formulate a strong solution. In summary, critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. As a person grows old, it is inevitable to have both physical and cognitive changes happen throughout their lifetime. In an average life span, a person’s physical and cognitive changes will normally vary depending on what age group they are in. For example, it is said that from birth to age five, a child will absorb more information including how to talk, language, form relationships, and fine motor skills than any other age. It is also said that that most rapid decline in physical ability is in older adults ranging from a loss in eyesight to severe dementia.
According to The Foundation for Critical Thinking (2007), "Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2007).
