True education is an immense topic. There are schools, books, teachers, experiences, reflections, decisions, oneself, and innumerable more ways to learn. Everyone has their own favorite ways to learn, but to get a full education one needs a combination of them. Senior year evokes unique images for everyone; it is a time of change for everyone who has ever attended high school. Senior year has taught me so much. So far during my senior year I have learned more than I have for a long time.
School is an amazing starting point for knowledge, it can lead us, help us, and give us ideas of what we like and what we want to learn more of; however, school and teachers can only teach so much, and the real learning comes from self-motivation. Senior year. The year known for its “lasts” of everything and the start of one 's adulthood. It’s also a busy part of life- college applications, college acceptance, graduation, and even get to know what the terminal disease “senioritis” feels like. Senior year is the last year that I will get the chance to cheer on the football team every Friday night, running track every Thursday, as well as seeing my favorite teachers on a day to day basis. This year is my year, the year that is going to change everything that I have ever known. Senior year. This is the year that every teenager waits for their entire school career. I have finally made it to the top. In high school, there are many challenges that need to be faced. My few main challenges are going to take place during my senior year. I am applying to the University of Minnesota Duluth, preparing myself for music auditions for potential scholarships, and having to say goodbye to all of my high school friends.
1. I encountered the most significant challenge when I moved to Canada in January, 2012. Before I came to Canada, my English grade was very good in China, thus, I thought living and studying in Canada would not be too difficult. However, I did not do well in the ESL evaluation at all, and I was placed in ESL 1 at my high school. Most of my classmates there spoke very little English, and they did not spend much time and effort on studying English. It was very difficult for me to study if I wanted to be their friends and at that time, they were the only friends I had in Canada. However, I expected much more effort from myself. I studied very hard and became the 2nd fastest ESL students ever to complete ESL 1 to 4 in my high school. Today, when I recall what I have accomplished, I think I learnt to trust myself and at the same, success in anything only comes from hard work.
Graduation is an exciting time in a person’s life, especially a high school graduation. When I think of family and friends gathering together to celebrate a joyous occasion, I feel I accomplished my strongest goal. It never occurred to me that graduation would be the end of my youth and the start of adulthood. Graduating from high school was an influential event that gave me an altered outlook on my existence. One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
After twelve years of school, it took me until now to figure out exactly why I had been there all those years. It was not to torture me by making me learn how to spell but to make sure that my classmates and I got the opportunity to make the most of ourselves. Opportunity that would come from learning as much as possible from books and beginning to see that the world focuses on more than just history and English . I owe my success in life and school to teachers who taught me to spell and to be respectful and responsible. Those quick to argue with me say that school's usefulness is shallow: deeper-real-life experiences truly educate a person. School should be seen not only as a place to study, but also as a place to learn about real life. People cannot depend on experience alone for education just as they cannot solely rely on information from school books to prepare them for life. The lessons, whether from a book or not, learned in school transcend the classroom to real life situations.
My senior year of high school…I want to enjoy people’s company, appreciate my family’s presence, and keep a permanent Polaroid of my “home town” etched in my memory. I have a purpose for the year, I know what I want to accomplish for the future, but I have to remember to make the most out of today because there may not always be a tomorrow.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
Having spent twelve years of my school life in just one small red brick building, the years tend to fade into each other. But the year I remember most clearly and significantly is my senior year of high school, where I finally began to appreciate what this institution offered to any student who stopped to look. Before, school had been a chore, many times I simply did not feel motivated toward a subject enough to do the homework well, and seeing the same familiar faces around ever since I was 5 years old grew very tiring soon enough.
