My Educational Philosophy
Education is one of the key ingredients to life. Teachers play a vital role in every individual’s education. Out of the four philosophies of education, I’m closely related to essentialism. To be an essentialist teacher is simply teaching based on structured lessons while intertwining the experience and information adolescents will need to become successful in their future.
My philosophy is based on my educational experience. Teachers are the determining factor of the atmosphere in the classroom. The most enjoyable classes for me consisted of well- driven teachers who had engaging activities that accompanied their lessons. I didn’t necessarily like the teachers who did all the sharing and didn’t give the class the opportunity to provide their input. To me, it’s important to clarify every students understanding while they are physically in class. As a student, I appreciated the teacher not solely taking over the class but serving as the mediator. The connection with the teacher is gained through balanced classroom engagement. Looking back, as early as first grade, I remember my teacher involving the whole class in various activities. I remember becoming one of her class helpers because I always finished my work early. It made me enjoy coming to school each day. The strong connection I shared with my favorite teachers ultimately helped me build my view on the way I’d like to operate my classroom.
My role as a teacher is not only to get my students prepared to transition to the next grade but to prepare them for their future endeavors. The student’s responsibilities include completing their homework and classwork, listening to the teacher, engaging in classroom activities and staying focused in class. Throughout the school year, I would like to see my students, grow in all aspects to become an improved student.
Education is like climbing a continual staircase. There are so many lessons and obstacles teachers and students will face as they climb the steps together. As a teacher, I will strive to push my students beyond their limits while ensuring they gain the knowledge that is necessary to become a successful individual. My Educational philosophy is defined in becoming a teacher as a set of ideas and beliefs about education that guide the professional behavior of educators. Also included in educational philosophy are one’s beliefs about teaching and learning, students, knowledge and what is worth knowing. My five general purposes for philosophy of education are: to set goals of plan, to teach useful and relevant information, be aware of students learning styles, modeling positive cooperative behavior, to look for solutions and to make sure those solutions are working.
Rafe Esquith, the author of Teach Like your Hair’s on Fire, has said that he shows his students that he is passionate about teaching so they become passionate about learning. Esquith also touched on building trust with your students. The teacher needs to show children that if you are going to do something with your students, you need to follow through and do it. He mentions that teachers should have a positive and patient attitude, being dependable, and fair. Esquith also mentions that when you become a teacher you are automatically a role model to your students (2007).

Self-efficacy is the belief that someone has the inherent ability to achieve a goal. A student who has a high self-efficacy allows himself to believe that he can be successfully academically.(Bozo & Flint, 2008) He believes that a challenging problem is a task that can be mastered This student is more committed to work in the classroom. (Schunk,1991). On the other hand, a student who has a low level of self-efficacy is likely to be academically motivated. He is more likely to avoid a task that is difficult, give up, make excuses, or lose confidence in his abilities (Margolis & McCabe, 2006). This failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Teachers need to find ways to motivate these students by increasing their self-efficacy.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
To begin, we need to understand the nature of students. The nature of students varies between individuals. The majority of students are well-behaved and come to school ready to learn. Part of this is due to the way they have been raised, but most students are basically good. There is a small percent of students whose nature, it seems, is to make everyone miserable. I do not know if this is because of a difficult childhood at home or because the student just likes to be the center of attention. Either way, there are always students that will give their teachers a hard time. I guess this is their nature. Every individual is different, therefore, the nature of the students I will teach some day will be different depending on their background and other various things that may happen to them as they grow up. For example, a student that has lost a sibling due to an illness or accident, may become very bitter throughout life. The nature of this student’s behavior which is being shaped by this may make this student a cold-hearted and mean student. These are the students that teachers need to spend extra time with and try to make them feel loved, no matter how hard this may be. I, as a future teacher, need to look at students and try to help them out no matter how difficult that may be.
Essentialism will be a part of my classroom because I will be teaching science. Science is part of the basis of essentialism that became stressed with the launching of Sputnik in 1957. The philosophy of essentialism also stresses that when leaving school students are able to apply learning from school to the real world. This is what I want to do in my classroom; I want my students to understand the material being taught to them and be able to apply it to the world around them.
An effective teacher will excite, inspire and motivate students to be active in their learning, investigate new areas of knowledge and make connections to future learning (Whitton et al 2010). When a teacher is successful, their students are motivated, mutually respectful and ready to build on their knowledge and solve real-world problems. To be a teacher of value, one must have many skills and qualities to cater for a diversity of learners and their individual development; this includes many personal traits that are noticed students.
Considering the traditional teaching methods and the abundance of test-taking in schools, it is evident that the philosophical theory, Essentialism, has a strong presence in classrooms. Although Essentialism affects policymakers, parents, and the mass public, it most importantly affects the students. By deeply analyzing the issue of an overwhelming Essentialist presence in education, one can conclude that Essentialism is the root of contemporary issues in education.
Like many people, my personal experiences have shaped who I am. As a future educator, I want my students to respect me as a teacher, but understand that I will be there for every one of them, whenever they need me. I will not judge them; I will only encourage them to do their best. I believe that education should be looked as as a desire to acquire all possible knowledge, not as a requirement or something that can be formally examined by standardized tests. There are numerous ways that children learn and I want to be able to encourage as much learning as possible for each child. I believe that using many methods of instruction is the most effective way of teaching to these various ways of learning. These methods include group work, hands-on activities, buddy work, etc. Assessment of children should follow the same idea. When children get the chance to perform on different assessments, they can adequately show their strengths and weaknesses. I do not wish to rely on tests only to assess the students in my class. Some types of assessment that I think should be inlcuded in a classroom are journals, presentations, projects and interviews. I also think that the classroom should be run with the help of the children. By distributing jobs among the children and everyone participating in the classroom, the students will form a sense of togetherness. This will eventually create a community within the classroom. I feel that this community of learners is essential for the students to perform effectively and efficiently. They will feel comfortable in the environment and will not be afraid to take risks or ask questions. The teacher will also be a member of this community and will not be seen as unapproachable or as the only leader.
Essentialism is an educational philosophy that pushes for the traditional or the back-to-basics approach to teaching. This philosophy which was popularized by William Bagley (1874-1946) presses on that the mastery of the most essential and basic academic skills such as Mathematics, Natural Science, History and Foreign Language, making sure that all these, together with very essential traditional and moral values of the culture is transmitted to students for them to become good model citizens (Sadker and Sadker, 2008) who will safeguard and preserve the ideal qualities of a strong nation. In conclusion, us teachers must find ways to reach the minds of every individual by allowing them to express themselves and understand every lesson taught. My goal as a teacher is to provide to in each and every student with the necessary skills and knowledge so they could succeed on their own. I want to leave a memory of myself as a teacher who was not afraid to roll up the sleeves to help another student in any way and influenced others to do the right thing. My colleagues recall me a teacher who regularly participates and who was active to contribute assistance to the school community.
My main goal as a teacher is primarily to provide students with the knowledge that will help them further excel in their everyday lives, but also to teach students to apply the knowledge they gained and take advantage of opportunities that will enrich their lives. Many times, students learn better when they feel a certain subject is relevant in their lives. I feel that it is important to have a curriculum that is based on the student’s interest, experience and capabilities. Having a textbook integrated in a curriculum is important, but a student will have a better understanding of the subject area when experience is involved. Although there are many different techniques to education, I feel that the philosophy of progressivism and essentialism best fits my style and belief of teaching.
