Reading has help shaped my development as a second language learner by being able to acquire what I have learned as a student. I have teachers who are willing to help further my education as a second language learner. Although I am not a fluent native English speaker like other ethnicities, I learn to strive hard in order to understood and communicate with others. Growing up, I struggle with my literacy because my parents did not have any books that will help me advance in my reading growth. Therefore, I can say that my personal sea of stories were different from other peers. I do not have the brightest literacy experience since I grew up in a traditional Hmong family and we lack the advantages to our literacy because my parents were never taught that reading to your child can help them with their developing growth. Instead the only time I can practice my literacy reading was from school. Reading at school help me development my learning and English pronunciation compare to when I am at home. At home, I communicate with my parents in my native language, Hmong. Hence, my native language has affected my literacy experiences because it had made me the person who I am today. I learned how to strive harder as a second language learner due to my family influences, school, and cultural groups.
My family influences had impacted my literacy experiences as a child because it made me realize that I must learn how to read by myself since I was not exposed to reading or writing at a young age, for examples, there was no extra help when I am at home. My parents do not make us read because they were not born in the United States but Laos. Hence, my parents and grandparents had never influence me and my siblings to read, for example, my mother...

Being a second language learner in English was the most difficult experiences I have had as a child because it lowers my confidence and learning skills. My literacy experiences can be seen as dark, dull, and very illiterate because I feel like I have not learn anything important as I was growing up or it may be that I have vague memories of my horrified childhood experiences and chose not to remember them. Never in my life had I experience the feeling of having my mother read to me. I was never raised in a household of great literacy but a household of newly immigrant from Thailand. This is the reason why I learn to strive harder for myself as a second language learner due to the struggles that I have went through as a child.
