I am a believer that all students need to have boundaries set up and explained on the first day of school. I think that all students want to learn and a great environment for learning starts with the rules clearly defined. I will have my classroom rules posted for all to see and we will go over them on the first day of class. After we go over my classroom rules I will ask the students if there should be any more added to our list and we will go over what they say and we will add them to my classroom rules as well. I think that all students should have some say in the rules that they are to follow and helping to make the rules will make them more apt to follow them.
My classroom rules consist of four basic rules. They are as follows: 1) Listen and follow directions quickly, 2) Keep your hands and feet to yourself, 3) Respect your classmates and your teacher, and 4) Work quietly. I think that these are important enough to go over and easy enough to follow. I want the students to know that I value their opinions and their thoughts and that they are in a safe environment where no one will make fun of what they think. My classroom will be a place of diversity and I want to use the diversity to make for more opportunities to learn and understand all of our differences. I want my students to know that differences are accepted and valued, because that is what makes them unique. There are not any two people exactly alike and that’s great! What kind of boring place would we live if everyone was exactly the same? I believe that students will flourish in a classroom that celebrates diversity and welcomes uniqueness. I believe that utilizing their differences to help learning will make the information we are learning more understandable for them.
